Scrivener
Scrivener is a word processing application that allows users to compose longer documents in sections to stay organized. Instead of one long document, you’re working with smaller files within your Scrivener file, breaking up your long novel into chapters so it’s easier to control the order of files. I’ve found this particularly useful for writing non-linear stories, where time moves back and forth. In addition to being able to move chapters around with no cut/paste, Scrivener is a great script writing tool, has a built in name generator and word target tracker, and a fantastic outlining tool.
Scrivener also doubles as an eBook converter. This software will convert your document into almost any eBook format and allows you to add in your own metadata and automatically creates a tiered table of contents based on your file tiers. Scrivener is one of the most popular tools among self-published authors for both writing and formatting eBooks.
