Earlier today I was on my way home, thinking of nothing other than what I was going to eat and what bible study I was going to do, little did i know that I would meet someone who would make my day whilst also making me take a step back and think about how I conduct my self and how I go about my day to day activities.
I was about 10 minutes away from home and had stopped at a set of traffic lights. A man was walking around the stopped cars and asking to clean windows, I have always said no to the people doing this, however, today I didn’t really get a choice, I was looking down trying not to make contact because I was ashamed that I didn’t have any money to offer him for the service that he was providing.
Thinking that this man was going to continue to another car, he did the opposite. he began to water down and squeegee away the water, he said, I will do this because your screen is dirty. What a selfless act! I thanked him and he waved me off and said to have a great day.
I couldn’t help but think about what this man had done, so the very next street I turned down and parked my car. I couldn’t help but wonder what his story was and why he gave up his time to do such an activity. I then got out and walked down to where this man was, I waited whilst he was cleaning a few windows, then started to speak with the man, I simply asked one question.
Why do you take the time out of your day to clean windows?
“From when I was 16 (approx 40-45 now) I was drug dependent and I am trying to get my life back because I am over depending on it.”
“I don’t do it for the money I do it to give back.”
“I have a Job but I don’t go because I prefer to do this. I am now clean and getting my house back to livable.”
This gentleman's name is Guy, it was an absolute pleasure to speak with him about what he does,
It’s quite fascinating to have seen how many people scolder at Guy, even whilst I was talking with him.
