Insomniac's Journal #1
Hey, hi, hello, everybody! This is the first of probably many journals from the nights when I just can't sleep and feel the need to type something. Every one of these will have a topic, and the topic of this IJ is: HOW TO BE A GOOD ALLY IN THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY~ First of all, I am no pro, but I am trans. That must make me somewhat a pro. Okay, so, if somebody you know has just come out to you, and they have been going by their preferred name and pronouns since you have known them, do not ask what their 'real' name or gender is. Again, do not ask what their 'real' name or gender is. This implies that their chosen name is invalid or not 'real', and the same goes for their gender. It can trigger dysphoria, which- I can tell you from experience- is no fun at all. So, just keep calling them by their preferred name and pronouns. Much thanks. Next, don't use transphobic words like 'tranny'. It's kind of offensive, so just don't use it. And if you see somebody using words like this, challenge them. Inform them that it's offensive, and tell them that you would very much appreciate if they didn't use that language. Number now, gender identity is NOT sexual identity. No matter what gender somebody identifies as, they can still identify as any sexuality. I, for example, am transgender FtM, and identify as pansexual. I can love any person, no matter their gender identity (to put it simply, hearts, not parts). And, even if I wasn't trans, I would've had to come out as pansexual at some point. So, respect that people love who they love. Remember that a gender identity is personal. If somebody decides to come out to you, it means that they trust you. Ask what pronouns they prefer and what name they'll be going by. Then, respect that. Also, check with them before you out them to anybody else. I gave my friends and family permission to tell people when they felt comfortable, but not all people will take that route. Respect people when they say no to you telling somebody, because this is their show, not yours. And don't go behind their back and tell somebody. So, that was IJ #1. Smile and stuff~ -Cade ^_^
