Going through a judicial online database to see if I can get my hands on some interesting criminal cases. I find one that’s set a bit earlier than my preferred time period and the next one I’m just nodding my head as I read the final sentence. And then because it’s in French, I go oh shit whaaat?? and had to reread the blurb on the sentencing because damn, don’t fuck around with the king’s soldiers.

Going to put a “read more” cut in case anyone wants to be spared some gruesome details. 

A sailor murdered a soldier from the king’s marine detachment , is found guilty and his sentence includes the breaking and shattering (the French are very precise with their wording cassés, brisés et rompus) of both arms and legs, followed by strangulation until dead and then transportation of his corpse along a public main road typically used to transport criminals, placed on a wheel (possibly for display, usually putting them on a wheel is meant to bind them and then break limbs, but they decided in this case to do that part beforehand) and lastly, fined 100 livres to pay the king.

That guy’s fucking dead and he still owes the king money. I couldn’t find a currency converter for the French livres (no it’s not the same as the French francs, that came after) but I seriously doubt this guy had 100 livres to fork over.

I just realized that my parents will be home that week-end and I could’ve easily put either of them as my emergency contact. However, I felt as though it was my duty as the younger sibling to be a little shit and place responsibility on my older sister.
