Hey Jules, I'm new your blog and I was curious about some things. I'm currently writing a television pilot, and have finished the series bible and most of the pilot episode. It's just practice for now, but I was wondering about the process of like;;; getting your things out there and pitching and finding an agent and the like (I'm a complete newbie). Are there any TV directed screenplay contests or just any resources for getting your stuff out there?
Hey Anon,
I’ve made a crash course post that breaks down the process: How a Screenplay Gets Made
This article has some top screenwriting contests that you can enter, but you can also submit to local competitions. It gets your screenplay seen and gives you more pull if your screenplay wins an award.
You can also take the cold-calling method and reach out to agents by writing query letters. This method can be a big pain because it requires you to send TONS of letters, but it does help get your name and scripts out there.
A lot of times, getting your story out there is also through personal connections. You can query studios for an internship or entry-level job and, once in, you can use those connections to share or pitch your scripts to others in the company. Either way, it’s important to know how to pitch your story casually or in a professional setting. You can learn more about that here.
Best of luck,
Jules
