Since the last sprite edit post had the Pastry and Black Forest lore I won't re-explain it. Same with White Lily and Dark Enchantress (see the last post, the one before that one is the pastry and forest sprite edit story one).

Anywayssss time for new shit.

Doughael in this au is still the Forkbearer, which is just below The Lady in White and Pure Vanilla in the hierarchy of the St Pastry Order. In their time in the rift their body became misshapen, still recognizable in some areas, but reformed to better serve the holy avatar. Due to them not being completely over the cult they don't fully know of the avatar's holy plan, however at this point their body and mind are too far gone to question their faith.

Menthol is an exorcist in this au, cleansing the cookies that have dough tainted by corruption. He questions Doughael heavily, sensing corrupted energy coming off of their dough. However they can't cleanse what everyone else believes to be an angel... so he'll play along for now to ensure Seltzer's safety.

Meanwhile Seltzer was abandoned at the St Pastry Order's convent years ago, her origin unknown. She has noticed over the years that she has a much longer lifespan, a constellation birthmark, and scales. She hides what she can as to not be assumed to be unholy by the church, however she never hides around Menthol, the only cookie in the order to accept her for who she is. She yearns for his affections... almost similarly to another sea cookie...

Menthol & Seltzer and their Head & Heart dynamic

What I find interesting about Menthol & Seltzer and their Head & Heart dynamic is that both of them know what the other needs in times of conflict. Menthol never pushes with his logic and instead appeals to emotions when Seltzer needs it. Seltzer does the same thing with logic:

It's not even a "when they need it most" situation because Seltzer does it so naturally in the scene where Menthol doubts Doughael's identity. He feels guilt and embarrassment. But even in an /emotional/ state, Seltzer is quick to reframe what he did as a way to eliminate all disbelief. Had he not questioned Doughael initially, there may have been silent doubters. It's a very logical conclusion that Menthol understands and hopes Doughael sees it that way as well.

For someone so caring and bubbly, you would think Seltzer would go the more trying to relieve his worries via emotion but instead she instantly takes a logical route because that's what Menthol needs. She knows this.

Menthol does the same for Seltzer when she's sobbing and trying to run to the worshippers walking towards the Avatar.

After stopping her physically and telling her it's too dangerous to walk closer, she's still in a sobbing state and trying to reach the followers. He makes no further attempt to reason that it's dangerous and instead re-frames it emotionally by stating that the worshippers have always been looking to be saved. The way to be saved now is to get them far away.

She agrees and calms down after this. She's able to lead people to safety despite her world crumbling down in front of her. What she cares most about is not her safety at that moment, which is the more logical thought, but instead the community and people she cares about. Menthol knows this about her and has no hesitance is speaking in a way she would connect to in such a panicked state for both of them.

I truly believe that they understand each other well and find it interesting that they approached the story by not having the Head and the Heart balance each other, but rather having them understand each other from the start and already knowing how to navigate each other. They never once have a conflict with these traits.

Cults are isolating and prey on people's vulnerabilities. This is seen when Seltzer talks about her not really having a flavor and how the Order accepted "someone like [her]". Menthol is the exact opposite, he's too potent of a flavor/scent. I think it's sweet that they are able to understand each other despite how different they are. The opposite thing is kind of their theme/dynamic and what I think draws them to each other. They most likely are much closer than Menthol presents (he's not very "emotional"). I truly think they care for each other.
