So, it’s been 2 and a half hours I’ve ruined 3 pages of paper and suffered this terrible pen running out of ink. 2 and a half hours sitting here trying to be a clever poet, try to put words together with skill and precision, with measure and beat, with rhyme and reason. But as time passes and the puzzle pieces of my vocabulary refuse to shape themselves to my will I realise that rhyme and reason aren’t working because rhyme and reason don’t apply. Rhyme and reason has no place here, in this book on pages I’m filling for you. What aspect of this little patch of nonsense where we’re growing our story has ever bloomed with reason? When have I ever forced expression for you like I’m having to force these rhymes, these empty rhymes I don’t want you to hear lilts I don’t want you to smile politely I don’t want you to step into a comfortable bubble of cliche greeting card crap. I want you to hear how I growl when you’re irritating, hear how I burn when you’re close enough to kiss, hear how soothed I am by every smile you share with a room Because that’s all these words are they’re my greatest tool, my favourite way to share with you all the sap I could never let fall straight from my tongue, all the ammunition you could possible need to mock or destroy me These words are the closest I think I’ll ever get to getting your head round the fact that I am so insufferably in love with you.
