On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress established what is now the U. S. Navy. This early predecessor comprised of a small fleet of ships and was designed to work with privateers to intercept transports that supplied British forces in North America at or near the Colonies.

Today, we celebrate the 248th birthday of the Navy and honor those who continue its mission of protecting our nation at sea.

WIP Wednesday Thursday

Tagged by both @fleurdebeton and @adventuresofprettyboyandthekid. I didn't have anything I wanted to share yesterday, but I do today. This is a little over 200 words of the beginning of the 6th chapter of Semper Fortis :)

Eddie was sitting at the kitchen table, his laptop open in front of him and the notebook he'd set aside for budgeting beside it, distracted by his thoughts as he found himself doodling on the page instead of doing any of the things he had to do. There were a couple of emails from Durand that he needed to check, and he should probably set up a call with his parents so Christopher could talk to them soon.

It had been a little under a month since Buck left for Coronado, though, and Eddie was still adjusting to his boyfriend's absence, to the knowledge that they shared that common background on top of everything else. It wasn't a matter of acceptance, he was sure of that; besides, whether he accepted that Buck was a SEAL or not wouldn't change the fact he'd been called back to active duty.

No, it was just… putting some things in perspective. Chim and Hen had, separately, brought up the tsunami, and that had made Eddie think back on what he knew about Buck, all the way back to his first shift. He wondered if that initial animosity had more to it than whatever insecurity the others thought it was about.

Me, furthering an agenda of artist Eddie? Yes, indeed I am. For the record, Buck has countless journals.

Semper Fortis for the WIP thing?

Okay, I'm putting this out there with... extreme trepidation.

This is a SEAL!Buck fic, and while I talked about the Tsunami Seal WIP a lot more freely, this is actually The Big WIP ™ (chaptered, might break the 30k words mark) and I've overthought this one to death and back, mostly out of fear of how it's going to be received.

Which is ridiculous because I already wrote a fic with the same set of headcanons and it is my #1 fic by hits and kudos.

Semper Fortis went through like, three names before I settled??? But this is one that suits it best, I think. It's an unofficial motto for the US Navy, that lines up with US Marine Corps (Semper Fidelis) and Coast Guard (Semper Paratus). It means always courageous or always strong. It fits.

The story itself is primarily about Buck in the aftermath of this big secret coming out and taking him away from friends and family for almost a year.

He's served, he hated it, and he had control stripped away from him when he was put in the reserves under shady terms. For the people who know he was in the Navy in the first place (which is not actually many), he says he was discharged.

But it's not the case, and six years of his life he didn't talk—wasn't allowed to talk about are brought to light when an officer comes looking for him with deployment orders.

His deployment covers, like, the entirety of s4 so that will be fun to write. I shied away from canon rewrites for as long as I could, damn it, but the story benefits from it so...

I'd share a snippet, but this is long enough as it is. But I can, if anyone's interest, tell more about it.

i’m curious about your semper fortis au if you’d want to talk about it more

(does maddie know he was deployed) (is everything the same canon wise until S4? or does buck get the deployment papers when he would’ve gotten the daniel news) (does he write letters to the diaz boys and calls like eddie did with shanon and chris?)

And you, friend, is my new favorite person (it's a growing list).

No, Maddie does not know. After basic and BUD/S, Buck sent letters to his parents, hoping that, even if they didn't show up, maybe Maddie would, but they never passed on the message because they never took it seriously. It all happened around the time Doug was starting to isolate Maddie from her family.

And the fic begins proper a month after the train derailment!! He's deployment a couple of months before s4 begins and is back right at its end :)

Everything surrounding Buck Begins is shoved to the sequel! Which. Still needs a lot of work, but is a proper 911/Hawaii Five-0 fic.

Season 4 in its entirety is the only thing getting rewritten, so save for some adjustments to Buck and Bobby's talk in 1.02, it is aaaaaaaaall the same.

And yes, Buck calls as often as he's able! He calls both Eddie and Maddie. Sometimes video, sometimes just a normal voice call. Sometimes all he's able to do is write a quick email update to them both.
