She was looking out at the water in the pitch black night from over the edge of the bridge. Behind her, streets were crowded and the roads noisy, the sidewalks were bright from the strong light posts and the food carts were busy. Standing on the little step to gain hight, arms folded on the edge and under her chin, she seemed far from that world, deep in thought, hypnotised by the life behind her and the slow flow of water underneath. Only one image played in her head and her heart raced unusually. His happy face, wide smile and crinkled eyed, messy hair and one lonely earring. “Sorry I didn’t pay attention. Are you okay?” She smiled remembering his deep voice when he apologised for bumping into her. It happened way back in the day but he seemed to have found an important place in her head. She remembered him throught the day. She’s been to markets, parks, a restaurant and many places tourists were supposed to see, but their encounter at the coffeeshop where they bumped into each other was the highlight. “Okay, get yourself together. It’s probably because you’re in a foreign country and he was just being nice asking if I liked it here. No big deal.” She mumbled to herself shaking her head in disbelief. She let out a deep sight and her breath formed little smoke like clouds. It was warm by day, but it seemed to get colder at night. She brought her hands down to her pockets and tightened the jaket around her. She stepped down from the edge of the bridge and turned on her heels ready to join one of those food carts. Trying the food of one of those was a most when visiting South Korea apparently. On her way to one of the busiest food carts, smoke surrounding the air and chatter everywhere, a man on the sidewalk caught her attention. She stopped moving forward and watched how that man was looking around as if he lost something or someone of great importance. His back to her, she wished she could walk up to him and offer to help him. “He probably doesn’t speak English. He’ll think I’m just a crazy stranger.” She thought. For a split second, stopping her from resuming her way to the cart, a strange feeling tugged at her heart and she looked back at the man.
As he put his hand on top of his head, the signs of despair clear in his demeanour, he turned to face her and her heart skipped a beat. “ It’s either the almighty fate, or I’m really going crazy.” She thought. His eyes still lost in search in the dark for something, she froze there undecided of what to do. The slightest move and she would burst in stardust out of hapiness. She stood there waiting for his eyes to catch her. She was never one to go into action and believed that if she just waited, everything that was meant to happen will come to her. She wished this trip alone to a completely different country would help her grow out of her confort zone, but she was back to her coward self waiting, praying for him to see her. As he turned yet again his back to her, a small feeling of disappointment pegged in her guts. “If it’s something meant to be, it will happen.” She stayed put still, waiting for her fate to disclose the way an innocent waited for the unjust judgement. And Fated they were. Namjoon turned sharply as if someone called him by his name, and it was her soul that screamed out for his. His eyes foud hers and they were lost in the dark no more. He stopped moving and mimiqued her surprise. Her heart has long stopped, and her breath has long seized to fog her sight. Namjoon wasn’t doing any better, but he was good at hiding the impact of the surprise but not the hapiness he felt. Forgetting about his weak knees and aching feet from walking all day, he wanted to run up to her. A wide smile growing on his lips, he moved towards her, and she replied with a brighter smile. “Now if it’s one of those cliché scenes where the guy is actually waving at someone behind me, I’ll die of embarrassment.” The doubts started crowding her thoughts, but soon they were answered by his strong, breathless and close voice. “I thought I’ve lost you forever.” His eyes illuminated by the reflection of the few lampposts around, seemed to mute her. “I looked for you in a couple other places visitors tend to see, and this was my last chance. Whoever recommended this place to you at this very time, I owe them big time.” He spoke expressing his desperation, not minding to explain why he was looking for her, since her eyes seemed to express to him her equal desperation for him. Thinking of how not leaving her confort zone was okay sometimes, how being a coward was okay sometimes, if the result was having this man brought back to her, she smiled and said to him “ Well fate never disappointed me.”
