First Line — tag game

Rules: Share a first line from your story. It could be the first line in the whole thing, a first chapter line, or any other first that works for you.

I always give my 'main' story, Hardknocks, all of the love in tag games, so I'll mix things up a little bit and go with the first line of one of my newer projects, a sort of action/drama story which I've been calling by the placeholder name Sender, which may or may not end up being its actual name depending on how lazy I am. I'm very early in the process of writing it (mostly doing a lot of planning/outlining, but have written a fair amount of the first chapter, as well as some other random scenes that I quickly wrote down as I thought of them) so this first line may, like a lot of other current aspects of the story, end up being vastly different, but for now this is the opening sentence:

As she steps into the apartment, manoeuvring her left arm behind her back to close the door (softly, as to avoid disturbing the baby currently sleeping in the crook of her right), she isn't surprised to see the halo of warm yellow light cast from the kitchen door across her otherwise darkened home.
