First it was the em dash, then it was the Oxford comma, and now some of you are saying hyphens are a sign of AI. Are en dashes next?
I don't think the people who go on ai witch hunts know the difference between en dashes and em dashes tbh

Sierra bounced on her heels. “Wasn’t kidding, though. Jasper says you’ve gotta come downstairs and get food yourself.” “How come?” Isi swung her legs out of bed and straight into her boots. Her motions were slow and laboured, but at least today her body responded when she wanted it to. “Something about making sure you don’t fall over on the way down.” Sierra shrugged. “I didn’t listen in great depth. You can ask him when you go down. Now hurry up, I don’t want it to get cold.” “I cannot promise speed if you also want me not to fall over,” said Isi, lacing her boots loosely and tucking the loose ends inside. “Just don’t fall on me if you do.”

A sixth voice joined them from under the table. Enya. Her sweet tone had an otherworldly quality to it that blended into and stuck out of the chorus at the same time. Tears welled in Isi’s eyes. The song rose in a joyful swell, sending gooseflesh creeping up Isi’s arms.

As though to spite their words, lightning splintered across the sky. Robin jumped; Isi instinctively put an arm out to catch him, but fortunately he had not lost his balance. A few seconds later, thunder rolled like a massive drum, and a renewed wave of rain swept over them.
tired
Now there were arms around her back, one on each side. It hurt. Everything hurt, but she was too tired to object. She tried to force her eyes back open, but her eyelids were heavy. Too heavy. They slid closed again, and the world went blissfully quiet.

A: A faint light in the room. A hand on her shoulder. A soft murmuring sound, too muffled to make out… no, that is a voice. There are words.
F: “Father.” She tries to keep her voice steady, but it breaks on the first syllable. Pain sears through her wrist. Beneath the red spilling over her skin, there is a rune or sigil of some kind. She cradles her arm to her chest. Blood pools in her elbow, soaking into her sleeve. “What are you doing?”
R: [didn't have it so here's a fun one with an R in there somewhere] The knife drips red.
A: At least her mouth no longer tastes of blood.
I: Instinctively, Iphigenia takes a step back and raises her hands in front of her, like she can hold back his magic or placate him somehow.
D: Darkness creeps into the edges of her vision. The sky high above her is dark and empty. Where are the stars? There should be stars. The fire of the circle is gone. She can’t breathe. Air. She needs air.

well as anyone who follows me is well aware, i'm still working on Seafoam, but I have posted the very first line a couple of times, so I don't want to do just that. But, since Seafoam is split into 6 parts, and I have by now started part 6, I could do the opening line for each part
Volume I | The Silent Shore
Part I — Tremor
The light of the dying sun bled into the raging sea, and still Pa’s ship hadn’t come into port.
Part II — Split
Thick mists from off the sea crept over the bluff as we rattled along the edge of it, keeping to the bumpy road as it took us further inland.
Part III — Ripple
The vermillion dusk had deepened to a rich crimson as the setting sun sank into the sea, slowly blanketing the realm in night in its wake, as if it were a mother tucking us into bed.
Volume II | The Unforgiving Sea
Part IV — Undertow
Weightless. Breathless. Lifeless. And yet…I stirred.
Part V — Drawback
Shafts of vibrant peach sunlight sliced through the rain-dappled surface of the sea, elongating the shadows of the fishing vessels of Aspyra.
Part VI — Wave
It was still sprinkling when dawn broke over Aspyra, the clouds parting just enough to let the gilded coral light stain a small portion of the overcast sky. Slowly, the sunlight stretched its long fingers across the choppy sea, but none of its promised warmth touched me.

I always give my 'main' story, Hardknocks, all of the love in tag games, so I'll mix things up a little bit and go with the first line of one of my newer projects, a sort of action/drama story which I've been calling by the placeholder name Sender, which may or may not end up being its actual name depending on how lazy I am. I'm very early in the process of writing it (mostly doing a lot of planning/outlining, but have written a fair amount of the first chapter, as well as some other random scenes that I quickly wrote down as I thought of them) so this first line may, like a lot of other current aspects of the story, end up being vastly different, but for now this is the opening sentence:
As she steps into the apartment, manoeuvring her left arm behind her back to close the door (softly, as to avoid disturbing the baby currently sleeping in the crook of her right), she isn't surprised to see the halo of warm yellow light cast from the kitchen door across her otherwise darkened home.
