genuine question: instead of using "developing countries" in ur academic papers, what are u using instead? im studying to be a history major and would rly like to use a better phrase than that
hey! hope u don’t mind me answering publically since i had another person ask too!
im a 2nd year soc major and i’ve been primarily been using “formerly colonized countries" because that works in most contexts i’ve encountered this year. i like it because it places the onus of perceived setbacks on the impact of colonization.
though in conversation i've also taken a liking to the term "majority word" (what the outdated third world/developing world would refer to) and "minority world" (first world/developed world refers to). this is probably what i’ll end up making a permanent switch to. i think it serves as a genuine reality check to people in the west that we’re definitely a minority fraction of the globe, something the term “developed world” fails to point out.
