Visited Case Study Houses #20 & #21 yesterday. #21 also known as the Bailey House by Pierre Koenig built in 1959 is registered in the U.S. National National Historic Register and Los Angeles Historical-Cultural Monument. Although House #22 is more recognizable, #21 is the most representative of Koenig’s steel-frame house style. House #21 is presently the location of Seomi International Art Studio. Case Study House #20 also know as the Baas House was built in 1958 in Altadena and represents a departure from late 50s Case Study House style in that it was constructed of wood rather then steel. Designed by Buff, Straub & Hensman Architects. Listed in the U.S. National Register. A private residence today. I was lucky enough to meet the owner and speak to them briefly. Shulman met with the present owners when they were working on the house. It needed a lot of repair. Julius Shulman generously presented them with his photography archive of #20 to help them with the restoration.
