“Seongwoo, you’re not ugly. We both know that. And you’re the funniest person I know.”
“So then why won’t you date me? Am I not good enough?” His eyes were sad. Your heart ached at the sight of him like that. The truth was you wanted to date him but you’ve been good friends for such a long time. You didn’t want to jeopardize your friendship just in case dating him would end up being a disaster.
“Don’t do this Seongwoo please.” You closed your eyes as you rubbed your temples slowly. He pursed his lips and regretted pushing the discussion on you. “Okay I’ll stop. Just don’t be annoyed with me okay?” He stood in front of you and forced you to look at him. You nodded and smiled half-heartedly.
One evening after a party at the dorm, Seongwoo was walking you home. You were in a bit of a bad mood because you saw a girl being way too close to him during the party. You didn’t mention anything before because then you would have had to admit your true feelings for him.
“Why are you pouting y/n?” Seongwoo asked in a sing-song voice.
“I’m not pouting.” You said sharply.
“Yes you are. Look, pouting!” He pressed his finger on your lips and you swatted his hand away abruptly. “I’m not!” You snapped. He only smiled wider while putting an arm over your shoulder. “What’s the matter y/n? Tell Ong...” He squeezed your shoulder. “Why are you walking me home anyway? Shouldn’t you be walking that girl home instead?” You grumbled, crossing your arms across your chest.
Seongwoo’s mouth shaped into an O. He loved it when you were jealous. “First of all I’m walking you home because you live in the most dangerous street in the country. Second of all that girl isn’t my priority. You are. Now don’t be jealous. You know that I’m all yours. Just say the word.” He waggled his eyebrows at you. You blushed at his words and playfully hit his side with your elbow.
He started laughing until you arrived in the dark alley way which lead to your apartment. There were two dark hooded figures in the end of the alley which made Seongwoo hesitate to continue. “Y/n you can sleep in the dorm tonight. And tomorrow you can move out. This area is so unsafe.”
“Come on Ong, it will be fine. I walk through this alley every day.” You walked on ahead and he immediately ran after you and grabbed your hand in his. “Stay close to me.” He whispered, his fingers locking with yours. The two hooded figures stared at both of you as you walked past them. They threw their cigarettes on the ground before starting to follow you closely.
“I think they’re following us.” You bit your lip nervously.
“Do you have your phone?” Seongwoo asked. You nodded slowly. “When I say run, you run okay? And be ready to call the police and the others.” Your heart was beating too fast and when you peeked behind your shoulder, one of the guys following you smirked at you. “Hey man, can we borrow your girlfriend for a little while?” One shouted. Seongwoo stopped in his tracks and faced them.
“I don’t want any trouble.” He told them while keeping you behind him protectively. “We don’t either. So why don’t you just go away and leave your pretty girlfriend with us?”
“That’s not happening. I’ll protect her until I die.” Seongwoo stated. You swallowed, your hand squeezing his while your other hand clutched your phone. Suddenly he dropped your hand when a fist came flying towards him. “Y/N RUN!” He ordered and you broke into a run. However the thought of leaving Seongwoo getting beaten up broke your heart and so you came back almost instantly for him.
To your surprise, he was handling himself very well. One of the guys were on the ground writhing in pain while he was fighting the other. “Seongwoo!” You called out worriedly. He turned around and panic washed over his face for the first time. “Run y/n! Get away from here!” He shouted. That was when he got punched in the face which made you scream as he hit the ground.
“No! Please stop!” You cried as he got kicked everywhere. Your hands were shaking as you tried to call someone for help with your phone. “Come on man, this isn’t worth it. She’s calling the police. Let’s go.” The one who was on the ground said to the other and they both ran away, scared. You rushed to Seongwoo’s side quickly with tears streaming down your face.
“S-Seongwoo-- I’m s-sorry!” You stammered. He held onto his side but when he looked up at you, he smiled softly. “Don’t worry y/n. I’m okay... Please don’t cry. Are you hurt?” He reached for your face and wiped your tears. “I’m safe because of you. T-thank you.” You sniffed. He smiled once more and sat up slowly. Then you helped him up to his feet, his arm around you as you supported him while walking the rest of the way to your apartment.
You wanted to take him to the hospital but he refused. He pressed that he wasn’t even hurt at all but his facial expressions said otherwise. When you arrived at your apartment, you sat him down on the sofa and checked his bruises.
“Seongwoo you need to go to the hospital. You might be having internal bleeding or something...” You bit your lip, worrying and shaken about everything.
“I just need some ice.” He said and leaned against the sofa. You ran to the kitchen and opened the freezer to grab ice cubes. You wrapped them in a tea towel before returning to Seongwoo. You sat next to him and pressed the cold compress against his bruised cheek. He flinched at first contact but eventually relaxed. He had his eyes closed as he reached for your free hand and held it once more.
“If it wasn’t for me you wouldn’t have gotten punched.” You mumbled. He opened his eyes to look at you. “But you came back for me y/n... that was really sweet.” He beamed. “You thought I would just leave you behind?” You blinked. He looked away and then said in a teasing tone, “maybe...”
“You’re an idiot.” You muttered under your breath. He started stroking your hand which made your face turn bright red. “I’m sorry again.” You whispered. He looked into your eyes and then brought your hand to his lips. “I meant what I said about protecting you until I die.” He whispered back. Your heart hammered against your chest and you couldn’t control your feelings for him any longer.
Lowering the cold compress, you leaned in and pressed your lips against his. His hands shot up to cradle your face as he kissed you hard and passionately. Kissing you was something he’d been wanting to do for a very long time. Suddenly all the pain in his body seemed to have disappeared as your kiss deepened. You pulled away slightly to catch your breath but he refused to spare a single second. He kissed you more until you were both out of breath.
Leaning his forehead against yours, he smiled broadly. “I don’t want to lose you Seongwoo.” You said as your eyes met. “You won’t lose me I promise.”
“But I--”
“Do you trust me?”
As you stared into each other’s eyes, you knew that you trusted him and he already proved that you could trust him with your life. “I trust you.”
Water, it was always a lot of water. You never knew where you were and there was nothing to grab hold of. You felt like something was pulling you deeper and deeper into the darkness. As your panic grew, it got harder and harder for you to breathe. You felt a stabbing pain in your chest and that was when you wake up screaming. You’re trembling, your whole body covered in sweat and your heartbeat was out of control. You wiped the tears that escaped from your eyes before grabbing your phone which ended up on the floor.
“Seongwoo.. I.. I’m sorry.” Your voice shook. “Y/n? It’s two in the morning. Are you alright?” Your boyfriend’s voice was full of concern but hearing it gave you a rush of calmness you desperately needed. “It was a nightmare.. again.” You swallowed, tears streaming down your face again. “I’ll be there in fifteen minutes, sit tight.” He ended the call straight away while you stayed in bed, hugging your knees until he arrived. You knew that you wouldn’t have been able to go back to sleep unless he was next to you. It had been a few days since you started having recurrent nightmares about drowning. You weren’t sure why it kept happening but sleeping next to Seongwoo always helped.
So every time you woke up because of one, you always called him and told him about it. He always came over to comfort you because he understood how much it affected you. When he arrived, he crawled into bed with you and enveloped you in his arms. “Hi...” He whispered in your ear, tightening his arms around your waist and pulling you closer to him. “Thank you for coming over again.” You told him, relief washing over you. “Any time baby, you know that. Now try and get some more sleep. I’ll be here.” He murmured in your ear sweetly. True to his word, when you woke up from a dreamless sleep he was right there next to you.
You untangled yourself from him and headed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. You had a proposition for him and you badly wanted him to agree to it so you decided to do it over breakfast. He appeared half an hour later, a cheeky smile on his face. “I smelled the bacon.” He said. “Sit down, I’ll serve you.” You carefully placed two pancakes on a plate and two rashers of bacon then placed it in front of him. He thanked you and he started eating right away. You sipped coffee as you watched him eat. “I wanted to talk to you about something...” You began. He looked up at you and nodded. “I’m listening...”
“I know I should see someone about these nightmares. But I’m scared that they might prescribe me something and I really don’t want that. So... would you mind just staying here for a while? And see if they do go away? If they don’t, then I’ll see someone. I mean.. if you don’t mind?” You bit your lip.
Seongwoo reached for your hand across the table and squeezed it. “I’ll be happy to help y/n. I want those nightmares to stop as much as you do. And besides I want us to live together sometime in the near future anyway so this could be a really good practice for us.” You couldn’t help but grin broadly, jump up and sit on his lap. You wrapped your arms around him, thankful that he was so kind and patient with you. “I love you Ong Seongwoo, I’m so lucky to have you.” You gushed, covering his handsome face with kisses. “Yes you are very lucky baby..” He laughed before capturing your lips in a passionate kiss.
Indeed, having him sleep next to you really helped. The nightmares weren’t every night anymore and when they did happen, you never woke up screaming or crying anymore. You simply woke up alarmed, turned to face Seongwoo to see if he was there and it would be enough for you to go back to sleep with no trouble. One evening he joked that he was like a dreamcatcher and vowed to be better at catching the bad dreams. After one week of staying with you, you got used to having him live with you that you decided on making it permanent. Part of you just didn’t want him to go in case the nightmares resumed normally.
“Don’t forget to buy the milk please.” You told him one morning as he got ready to go to the supermarket to buy some groceries. “Do you need any of your lady things?” He winked at you. “No thank you. I’ll get those myself.” You chuckled. “You know I don’t mind buying them for you baby.” He hugged you from behind and nipped your ear playfully. “I know but last time you got the wrong ones...” You giggled, patting his arm. “Did I? How silly of me!” He kissed the side of your face over and over again. “I’ll see you soon. Love you~” You told him. “Love you more y/n, always.” He said and left.
While he was out, you tidied around your apartment then ran yourself a bath. When you got out, there was a knock on your door. It was Seongwoo’s best friend, Minhyun. “Hey Minhyun. What a surprise!” You greeted him cheerfully and let him inside. “Y/n.. you look well.” He said while watching you very closely then handing you the bouquet of flowers he bought. “Oh thanks! Sorry about the state of me, I was just freshening up.” You mumbled, looking down at yourself dressed in only a thick, fluffy bathrobe and your hair wet. “No, its really nice to see you umm.. happier...” Minhyun was very careful with his words.
He was looking around your apartment before he sat down on the sofa. You offered him a drink but he refused. You noticed that he hasn’t asked about Seongwoo yet. “So how are you y/n? The nightmares? Have you seen someone like I advised you?” He asked, his serious tone catching you off guard. You didn’t remember telling him about your nightmares. Then you realized that it was obviously Seongwoo who told him. “Y-yeah I still have them from time to time but its not as bad anymore. We managed to come up with something which is becoming to be a really great help.” You smiled widely.
“We?” Minhyun blinked.
“Mmm. He’s been staying here and it helps. A LOT. He said he’s like my dreamcatcher.” You laughed softly. You didn’t understand Minhyun’s baffled expression and so you just carried on talking. “I’m actually going to ask him to move in... What do you think? Is it too soon for us?” You glanced at him and his bewildered expression.
“Y/n.. who are you talking about? Who’s been staying here?” He questioned. “Seongwoo of course! Have you guys not spoken recently?”
Minhyun’s eyes widened. “What?”
“You’re weirding me out. Its like you don’t know anything! Anyway he’ll be back soon, he’s just at the supermarket.” You nodded. “Oh my God y/n.” He took a deep breath and sat closer to you. He grabbed both of your hands and looked into your eyes. “I should have been a better friend. I should have checked up on you more often. I thought you were coping well but I was wrong.” He stated as he squeezed your hands. “What are you-- huh?” Your scalp prickled. “It’s been two months y/n. Seongwoo’s been gone for two months.” Minhyun revealed, making your heart sink. “No.. I.. no.. Minhyun don’t say things like that....”
“Y/n...” He stroked your hands as gently as possible. “You started having nightmares after the accident. You are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder that’s why I told you to see someone. I’m sorry...” You stared at Minhyun as your whole body tensed up. It then occurred to you that everything that had happened in the past week had been a lie that your brain conjured up in order to survive. Slowly but surely, the memory of the accident returned to you. The trauma that the accident brought on you made your brain forget about the accident altogether. “Oh no...” You breathed as you relieved the memory.

“Of course I’ll stay over tonight but tomorrow you stay at mine. Deal?” Seongwoo flashed you a breathtaking smile. You admired him as he drove, his face glowing. “When we live together, this would never be a discussion anymore.” You told him as you saw the sun setting ahead of you. “That’s true. We’ll get a big apartment, three dogs and then get married. Deal?” He chuckled. “Deal!” The thought of having a future with Seongwoo made your heart feel like it was going to burst. You both knew from the beginning that the two of you were meant for each other. You and him against the world. Always.
“Seongwoo.. will you still love me when--”
“Always.” He interrupted you. “Wait let me finish. Will you still love me when I have gray hair and wrinkles? Be honest!” He grabbed your hand and laced his fingers with yours. “Y/n, y/n... I will love you always. Remember that okay? Always.” He said softly, turning his head to gaze at you lovingly. Just then you saw a car heading directly towards you. “Baby...” You swallowed, pointing at the road. “This idiot is in the wrong lane!” Seongwoo swerved away to avoid crashing against the car but as he swerved too hard, he lost control of the wheel. You just entered the long bridge and on the sharp turn, your car hit the bridge railing causing it to break and the car to go through.
You screamed as the car fell into the river in a loud crash. “Y/n, I need you to calm down.” Seongwoo spoke as the water started seeping through. “I can’t swim, I can’t swim!” You were hysterical, panicking and pulling at your seat belt instead of pressing the button to open it. Seongwoo knew that he had to be calm for the both of you but then he realized that his seat belt was broken and wouldn’t open. Wanting to save you, he leaned over and opened your belt for you. The car was slowly sinking and as soon as he rolled down the windows on your side, more water filled the car. “Climb out of the window y/n and swim up okay? You can do it...” He instructed you.
“What about you?”
“I’ll be right behind you baby.. now go!” He ordered. You leaned towards him and kissed him before taking a deep breath and climbing out of the car window. Once you were out, Seongwoo continued to struggle to let himself free of his seat belt but it was no use. It was completely stuck and it dawned on him that he wouldn’t be able to get out. Bystanders by the riverbank helped you get out of the river. Someone wrapped you in a towel as you heard sirens approaching.
“Seongwoo, come on. Where are you?” You cried as you watched the waters. “Could someone please dive in and help him? My boyfriend is still down there! Someone please!” You sobbed.
You watched helplessly as strangers dived in and out. When an ambulance arrived, they checked you up but you weren’t focusing on what they were doing to you. All you wanted to see was Seongwoo coming up and out of the river, smiling and rushing over to you. Two hours later, the car was finally lifted out of the river but it was all too late.
Minhyun wrapped his arms around you as you cried and called out for Seongwoo until your throat was sore and your voice hoarse. “I should have done something Minhyun.. It was all my fault.. I let him die... I-I let him drown.” You stammered, your tears staining his shirt but he didn’t care. He comforted you as much as he could. “You can’t blame yourself y/n. It was an accident. Seongwoo wouldn’t want you to blame yourself.” He whispered as he rubbed your back soothingly.
“I should have been the one who drowned.”
“He wouldn’t have let that happen.” Minhyun stated. “He wouldn’t have been able to live without you.”
“But I can’t live without him either. I can’t... I need him. I need him here Minhyun. Oh God, I miss him so much.” You wept, your heart breaking all over again. You would give anything to see Seongwoo again but life was cruel. When it felt like you have ran out of tears, you drank a glass of water and curled up on the sofa while Minhyun watched over you. “He would want you to continue living y/n. He saved your life for a reason.” He said. “Maybe not any time soon but eventually, you have to get better. For him... He loved you so much.”
