Just finished: Gracefully Grayson This book tackles the controversial issue of transgender children. Grayson is a boy who feels he should be a girl. The story is written in 1st person from Grayson's perspective of life trapped in a boys body wanting to be a girl. He lives with his aunt and uncle after a tragic car wreck kills his parents. Grayson decides to audition for a female lead role in the school play and receives it. This causes heartache and controversy for Grayson and his teacher. The story kept me engaged and I can see many students enjoying it as well. It reminded me of the book Wonder in many ways and our students are always asking to read that book. Wonder and A Child Called It are one of the most requested books in the library. They deal with real issues and I can forsee that students will see this in the same light. This book completes my quest to read all the books on this year's Sequoyah list. It has been a wonderful group of books that I am proud to promote. There was one u didn't like but 14 others were excellent. Here are my top 4 in no particular order. 1. Prisoner of Night and Fog 2. Love and Other Foreign Words 3. Jackaby 4. There Will be Bears Next week I will be presenting a booktalk over all the books with the 8th grade student during 8th B lunch. Please come by and get your tickets to attend.
Our 2017 Sequoyah Book display for the #gjhslibrary. This was a fun display to create and collaborate with our teachers. Several teachers spent their summer reading and reviewing books on this year's list. The blue posters are the reviews from our teachers. All of the books have been read and reviewed so that students can know what each book is about and what our teachers thought of the story. I lack reading 3 before I can say I have read all on this list. I plan on promoting these books all this year and have students vote for their favorite in March. They only need to read 3 books before they are eligible to vote. Teachers who read the books have displays with the books they have read on their doors. Ask a teacher what they thought of the book. I also have 200 bookmarks with the titles and authors of each book on the list to keep track of what they read. I look forward to a great year this year and I have high hopes of students becoming better readers.
Just finished: The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights Non-fiction is the way to my heart and this book was very interesting. The title gives away the topic but for our young readers they have never heard about this event. This was the first major event to end segregation in the military and eventually the entire country. The point of view this book is written in is from the sailors and gives a nice tone. This way another great book from this year's Sequoyah list.
I have 4 more to read and will have completed the list. My goal is to be done by Aug. 18th!
