Evaethi Gets a Horse? 👀

This one was originally a prompt fill for a writing meme ask I got (checks calendar) way too long ago, but I expanded the concept a bit. It's a little looser but one I'm focusing on because it is from child!Evaethi's pov and I think it's important for me to get done to nail her character and the dynamic she has with her dad and Sparrow. I'm considering it required writing before I can actually work on the family reunion fic lol

Basically what it says on the tin--it's how Evaethi gets Hazelnut, her horse--but on a broader level it's Evaethi dealing with the fact that she's a failgirl overtly and also perpetuating behaviors against Sparrow covertly. Below's are two rough snippets that aren't long enough on their own yet:

Eva wears the coral dress with blue frills, the hem clipped on the inside--Evaethi had grown taller than Eva within the past few months, but Father won't buy more than one set of dresses for the two of them since there's only one Lady Evaethi. Evaethi tried to make herself shorter for a few days after Father's hours-long lecture about finances once he realized the two were no longer the same height, but walking with bent legs made her knees hurt. So instead, the servants found some very pretty shoes from the upper west wing where Mama used to live, kitten heels that Eva stuffed with rags to make fit until her feet grew into them. The few inches it gave, along with the folding hem trick, did its job, and Eva could wear the dresses without issue, even if she always cringed a tiny bit when she walked down the halls with her heels clacking against the tile. Evaethi understood; nothing had happened yet, but one day Father was gonna hear that noise and get mad. Hopefully Evaethi wasn't nearby when that happened.

Evaethi turns to her, eyes shining. "You really think so, Eva?" "I do." Evaethi turns back to her new roan, rubbing his nose with newfound enthusiasm. "Hazelnut. Your name is Hazelnut. Don't you forget it, no matter what Father says. Eva, do you want to help me brush him?"

What hobbies does your Tav have? How did they acquire these interests?

Zophus has several hobbies, and the two he'll admit to is based after 19th century hobbies. He loves sports, particular Sigl style rugby, and he's very good at it due to his height and size. He also enjoys other contact sports, notably when he was young - after all that was what he could afford to do after his mother's death. Zophus also likes reading, though he doesn't have access to many books due to him rotating in the Harmonium colonies and the Harmonium not particularly liking books that cause disorder. He maintains a scrap book with nautical themes of the sea, rivers, and oceans including boats, sea life, and landscapes.

Does your Tav have a treasured item with them? If yes, what is it and why is it special? If no, how do they feel about item sentimentality in general?

His hair. He insists that counts. One of his favorite memories that he can recall from childhood is sitting near the stove after a bath and his mother brushing his hair clean and told him how much he looked like his father. Zophus knows his long hair is frowned upon, but he maintains it and has learned french braid it and pin it under his helmet. In Faerun he takes the luxury of wearing his hair mostly free and long.

Among his peers, Zophus doesn't show much sentimentality out of fear of showing weakness. He maintains that among the Tadfools until a little before dealing with the goblin camp, being more protective of Karlach's stuffed animals than she is sometimes.

The fool, death, and the star for Inky?

The Fool: What are your muse’s thoughts on new beginnings? Does it frighten them or excite them? Inky adores new beginnings. She is an adventurer in the purest sense of the word. Any time she gets to go try something new or meet someone new or go somewhere new, she's down. That said, she's done the "having a new beginning but doing it completely alone" thing twice now (traveling to Eorzea, then again after the bloody banquet), and the stress of that does not excite her. But as long as she's not feeling totally alone, she'll happily go for something new.

Death: Is there anything in your muse’s life that they should be letting go of? Inky doesn't dwell that much. She doesn't tend to give much power to the things in her life that hurt her and chooses to hold on tight to the things that build her up instead. That said, she probably could stand to let go of her fear of going home. It's been a long time since she's seen her biological family in person, and a little part of Inky is afraid that if she went to see them, they'd try to stop her from leaving again and she'd have to break ties in order to get free.

Also, this is something she did successfully let go of recently, but she was having a hard time having the "What are we?" conversation with Thancred during Shadowbringers, and they definitely should have had that discussion earlier than they did. Inky was afraid to bring it up because she didn't want things to be over, and Thancred was too busy angsting to think about how many problems it was causing for him to wait for her to realize it herself.

They are now happily broken up and back to being friends (which is code for there's still a lot of tension even though they let go of their relationship in the aftermath of ShB, and now they're being parent-trapped by Ryne).

The Star: What does your muse take inner comfort in knowing? What guides your muse? Inky takes the most comfort in the world from her friends. If she knows her friends are there for her either physically or spiritually, she finds herself very grounded and resilient, even in the face of impossible odds. She is guided by the principle of being kind first and silly second; as long as she has done the best that she can for the people she loves, her conscience doesn't weigh too heavily, leaving her capable of joking and laughing.

Affinity: The Spiral. Almost made her The Eye because she does love searching for knowledge, but no so much for the sake of recording it or uncovering secrets- she just likes finding exciting things and, more importantly, experimenting with them. So I think that leans her more to the Spiral, where she seeks out weirdness and then starts playing around with the weirdness to see what she can do with it.

Weakness: The Buried. Any sense of being trapped or confined- basically being stifled and forced into a limited, stagnant life- is something she dreads. She sees the Spiral as expanding her mind, while the Buried is suffocating it with boredom

3. Who kisses the inside of their partner’s palm before reassuring them everything is going to be okay?

Edér does this. He’s a big fan of the open palm kiss already and Adira tends to be the one who needs more reassurances when things aren’t going her way. She puts on a pretty good front at being upbeat and positive in the face of adversity, but he knows her well enough to be able to tell when she’s flagging.

7. Who breaks out the first aid kit when the other gets a paper cut?

Adira! I mean, she does this with everyone, but she’s worse when it’s Edér who’s injured. He grumbles about her fussing over him, but he secretly enjoys it, even when it’s completely unnecessary.

9. How do they hold each other when their partner asks to be held?

Okay, regardless of who asks for it, they end up in the same type of hold. She wraps her arms around his neck, and his are around her torso, usually one hand resting on the small of her back. They’re so close in height so it allows them to get as close as possible to each other. There also likely a forehead touch thrown in for good measure if Adira’s the one doing the asking.

16. Who did you romance in your first playthrough?

Adam. he was all “working with a human will slow us down” and “I am antagonistic and clearly don’t want to be here” and Kira (and I) went “OH NO, you’re gonna fall in love with me and you’re gonna like it” (the first part of that has definitely happened, we’re still working on the second part 😉)

53. What is your detective’s biggest fear?

loss of agency. having decisions made for her, being forced to do things or having the ability to protect herself taken away. the Murphy case was... tough for her, to say the least.

79. Is your detective more genuine or sarcastic?

it depends on the route, she’s more likely to be genuine with Nate/Felix and more sarcastic with Adam/Mason because they just have personalities that draw that out of her, but I think she usually ends up about 60/40 skewed toward genuine :)
