Obscure/lesser known "ships" in Madou-era Puyo Puyo
Just a fun little activity for people who want rare pairs. I personally don't ship most of those (okay maybe like a couple lol) but I thought these were fun to share. Can be taken either romantically or platonically if people prefer, I'm just sorting my findinds!
I got most of these from some websites, games, and some manga material. I'm mostly going to do Compile-era cuz I'm more familiar with that!
I will say in advance, I adamantly refuse to cover any of the obscure ships of Arle with adult figures (the Headmaster, Lucifer, and Masamune). They are all disgusting, end of story.
Owlbear x Serilly
This is the fourth most popular Serilly-related ship, with the most popular being Schezo, then Suketoudara, and third is surprisingly Witch! (maybe not that surprising lol)
It comes from the Happy Birthday DiscStation game, where if Serilly builds enough kindness in her stats, she can go through a story route involving the thuggish Owlbear, who actually has a heart of gold under his delinquent exterior…
Sadly this pairing seems to have been lost to time due to Owlbear's lack of popularity as a character. I love that they gave him a day in limelight at all thought, when an expected route could have been Serilly befriending Schezo, we instead got something unique…
I guess this is a good middle ground for Serilly for people who don't like her with Suketoudara at all, but don't really want to pair her with Schezo because they like him with someone else… or maybe someone likes cute beast men!
Ragnus x Kikimora
Surprisingly, it doesn't just come from this artwork. There is quite a bit of basis for it.
Kikimora is the ONLY Compile-era character who believes in Ragnus' status as a hero in Puyo Puyo Box (I think). In that game, Ragnus has a business where he can be asked questions to help others in their time of need. However, no one takes him seriously at all or berates him, viewing him as a child… except for Kikimora.
Kikimora often sends Ragnus request letters for aid, and he actually responds most likely, calling him a true hero when a problem is solved for her.
It serves as in an interesting contrast, since Nega Kikimora seems to be somewhat tsundere in regards to Schezo in people's fan-art. (I won't be talking about that one here unless this post gets enough traction and questions to warrant that lol)
Mini Zombie x Merigu
Talked about in my "characters who haven't returned for Quest" post. These two are around the same age (?) in the sense they are child-like but have been existing for a long while due to being undead, are fought on the same floor in Puyo Tsu, and even in Madou Monogatari I they usually share a floor space.
I think with the idea of "random mooks on the same floor interacting" in mind, it's cute. I definitely think they go on play dates. Banshees are cold, so for a rotting zombie kid, the hugs must be nice…
This one has always been a favorite of mine as far as innocent puppy love is concerned-❤️
I just feel bad for the other two Banshee Trio members. I know Merigu is the most mature of the three, so I guess it checks out that she might be the most approachable.
Panotty x Harpy
First debut of this pairing comes from Bayoen Special, and we would get some crumbs for it in Puyo~n since they are waiting on one another. Even in Waku Puyo, they share the Starlight Stage!
This makes the most sense since they are both misunderstood musicians who think themselves as talented. The age difference on the other hand…
Panotty is 9 while Harpy is 14. We kinda have an Anakin and Padmé situation here. Maybe it will be okay. Archan is an alternatively option for Panotty for people who don't like the age difference, but I don't see that one as much.
Skeleton T x Mummy
Most notable in Totally! Puyo Puyo when they act out scenes and are down with kissing each other for Satan's entertainment. The two are also very mysterious about what they originally looked like (either under bandages or in life).
Regardless of Mummy's gender (which this manga isn't even certain of despite them always dressing up) the two seem to nearly have the dynamic of an old couple that work as Satan's servants while… Nasu does the finances like a weird third wheel.
If people want to, feel free to do redraw of this with Nasu stealing a sip of that green tea. If it wasn't obvious, I was converted to liking this one while writing my fic.
Succubus x Female characters
Yeah, we saw this one coming. Just as Incubus is a source of yaoi shipping with Schezo, Succubus has similar treatment. The most popular amongst Japanese fans is with Arle, unfortunately, due to some dialogue in Waku Puyo where she wants Arle to join her as an apprentice of sorts…
Rulue on the other hand- this one I like, in Super Nazo Puyo Tsu, Succubus loves to collect all beautiful things. Rulue seems less annoyed with her than she is with Incubus, who is just arrogant and the "worst type of person".
In the same gag manga that has the above panel, Succubus also finds Mummy and Zoh Daimaoh to be beautiful… though I dunno if I trust her around Zoh!
Uroko Sakana Bito x Female characters
This usually applies to Merrow, or the pink-haired Uroko-Sakna Bito. Much like Succubus, in the Madou Monogatari games, she loves anyone with a beautiful face and leaps over to kiss them, much to Arle's disdain.
This carries into Final Exam too, where Uroko-Sakana distinctively has the blue Serilly-like design, but still has the typical Merrow personality.
Regardless of the target's gender, she should learn to ask first… Maybe she could get with Succubus with that kind of forwardness.
Arle x Nameless boy
In the ending of Madou Monogatari I (MSX2 and PC98) there is a boy Arle gets into a scuffle with that some have dubbed "Arle's first love". There's not much to go off on but…
I should note that the boy's hair is blonde in PC98… if genetics work, then Fia…
Dark Matter x Wish
This pairing only got popular and took off BIG time after Tower of the Magician's 20th anniversary where more people began drawing them together. It's not hard to see why, there is untapped, tragic backstory potential between these two. I don't think I need to delve that far.
Actual OTP in this regard, loved it since day one. Toxic and doomed, 10/10.
Demon Servant x Rulue
This one is odd. It increased in popularity when Demiserf returned to Puyo Quest and called Rulue troublesome in his dialogue. It seems to be the most popular pairing involving Demiserf besides with Vampire. He says that his only weakness/thing that troubles him are "blue-haired women that can fight".
But there is a LOT of tension fuel for this pairing in Rulue's Spring Break of Fists, I just wish I knew the context. A lot of that game is not translated… but I know that in the "Rulue in Wonderland" route, he is usually the main antagonist in pursuit of the Orb of Wishes!
Depending on the route, he either made a pact with Rulue's deceased grandmother and he is a part of the illusion, or the two are feuding and a silhouette of Rulue's grandmother will defend her from Demiserf.
One way to defeat him is with the music box of Rulue's gifted to her by her grandmother. This route is really wonderful, I hope we get a more clear translation of the connection between Demiserf and Rulue soon.
In any case, this is Rulue's most popular "foe yay" type pairing. Sorry Count! Lol.
Choppun x Male characters
This character is always hard to talk about cuz it shows Compile's unfortunate side… He… does actually have a degree of "gay man" appeal, besides Minotauros he is the most traditional "muscle guy type" character.
In some of the manga, Choppun actually likes getting attention from Satan, Schezo, and Incubus who all confuse him for Arle. Ignoring Compile's use of homosexuality as a gag, I kind of like Choppun being a gay/bisexual dude that cosplays as opposed to being a l*licon pervert who can't keep his hands to himself.
Actually, Incubus doesn't seem to be too bothered by the confusion, unlike Satan. He accidentally steals Choppun's clothes thinking they are Arle's and even upon finding out, he steals them! Only Arle seems to be bothered by it… maybe if they get together, they can leave everyone else alone.
Well, to end this off, there is a 4koma where Rulue gets jealous of Mummy seeming "close/friendly" with Satan.
Anyway, someone lemme know if you guys want more of this. There are a couple of others I didn't fully touch on because I wasn't sure if they were interesting enough!
