Paul Magrs can write the hell out of a story. I listened to two of his stories from the Tom Baker audio series Doctor Who Serpent Crest. Delightful!
In these stories—of which there were, I think, fifteen—the Doctor spends several years based out of a Victorian manor house called "The Nest," in a small country village, with his housekeeper. This is what Tom Baker was doing before he signed up with Big Finish.
Sadly, they originally wanted to cast Nicholas Courtney, but he was too ill to accept a role as the Brigadier in these stories. He may have been second choice, but Richard Franklin is absolutely terrific. And Mrs. Wibbsey is perfectly suited as the Doctor's no-nonsense housekeeper as well as being a reluctant—but effective—companion.
After "Hornets' Nest," "Demon Quest" & "Serpent Crest," Paul Magrs' Doctor Who CDs continue with "Spider Fest," "Dragon Vest" & "Lemon Zest."
