New Snape Theory

Well I hope it’s new at least. It’s not much... but it’s still something.

It comes from this passage:

"I think I’d better teach you how to block unfriendly spells," said Lockhart, standing flustered in the midst of the hall. He glanced at Snape, whose black eyes glinted, and looked quickly away. "Let's have a volunteer pair - Longbottom and Finch-Fletchley, how about you -" 

"A bad idea, Professor Lockhart," said Snape, gliding over like a large and malevolent bat. "Longbottom causes devastation with the simplest spells. We'll be sending what's left of Finch-Fletchley up to the hospital wing in a matchbox." Neville's round, pink face went pinker. "How about Malfoy and Potter?" said Snape with a twisted smile. 

"Excellent idea!" said Lockhart, gesturing Harry and Malfoy into the middle of the hall as the crowd backed away to give them room. 

"Now, Harry," said Lockhart. "When Draco points his wand at you, you do this." 

He raised his own wand, attempted a complicated sort of wiggling action, and dropped it. Snape smirked as Lockhart quickly picked it up, saying, "Whoops -my wand is a little overexcited -" 

Snape moved closer to Malfoy, bent down, and whispered something in his ear. Malfoy smirked, too. Harry looked up nervously at Lockhart and said, "Professor, could you show me that blocking thing again?" 

"Scared?" muttered Malfoy, so that Lockhart couldn't hear him. 

"You wish," said Harry out of the corner of his mouth. 

Lockhart cuffed Harry merrily on the shoulder. "Just do what I did, Harry!" 

"What, drop my wand?" [OOF]

But Lockhart wasn't listening. 

"Three - two - one - go!" he shouted. Malfoy raised his wand quickly and bellowed, "Serpensortia!" 

The end of his wand exploded. Harry watched, aghast, as a long black snake shot out of it, fell heavily onto the floor between them, and raised itself, ready to strike. There were screams as the crowd backed swiftly away, clearing the floor. 

"Don't move, Potter," said Snape lazily, clearly enjoying the sight of Harry standing motionless, eye to eye with the angry snake. "I'll get rid of it...”

Here’s the theory:

Snape just saw Lockhart failing to teach Harry how to block a spell. 

He then mutters in Draco’s ear. We can easily guess he tells what to cast. The spell? Serpentsortia. 

Now, that might look insignificant, but when we consider it, it means that instead of casting Expelliarmus, Tarentallegra, Rictusempra or another spell that’s been used just minutes before, spells that would hit Harry directly and harm him, Draco conjures a snake. Not only the snake doesn’t strike yet, so Harry won’t be hurt, but Snape is ready to banish it right away. 

In short, instead of trying to harm Harry through Malfoy, Snape has just spared him from being ridiculed or blasted against a wall.

Furthermore, we could guess that, if Lockhart hadn’t intervened and Harry hadn’t talked to the snake, it would have been Harry’s turn to attack Draco. Maybe then, if Snape had taught Draco Protego, Malfoy would have used the blocking spell against Harry. Like Snape who taught Harry Expelliarmus indirectly by using Lockhart (which is a disarming spell rather than an offensive one), Snape would have taught Harry, right after, the Protego Charm using Draco.

Meaning that in a single hour of Duel Club, Snape has:

taught Harry’s signature Expelliarmus

prevented Draco from directly harming Harry in a situation where Harry was expected to only block

and would possibly have taught Harry Protego if things had gone as planned.
