Being a self-proclaimed "recovering project manager" I am sensitive to the people who we are impacting, however, I am also extremely dogmatic on improving the business/IT relationship.
When will our officers live by Jesus’ Examples as a Servant-Leader?
Is there any greater example in the entire Bible than Jesus Christ? Certainly not! When Jesus was speaking to His disciples shortly before He was to die on the cross He told them “I have given you an example, which you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (John 13:15-16). What was it that Jesus had just done? He had just finished washing the disciple’s feet! Talk about an example of being a servant. He even washed the feet of the one who would betray Him (Judas). The disciples should have been the ones that had done this in the first place because usually the one who was the most humble or the poorest in the home washed the guest’s feet-typically a bond servant. Jesus showed them that even the “Son of Man” could descend to humble Himself to be a servant in the hopes that they should do likewise.
We can only hope that the police officers within our law enforcement agencies will practice good leadership qualities based on Jesus’ examples; in doing so, they will learn the qualities of a great leader. But instead, they go against all that their job descriptions stipulate. The video above depicts police brutality in its worst form. We the citizens are now given the impression that they no longer serve, protect and reassure, instead, they use their power without mercy and woe be unto the poor civilian who falls victim to their merciless acts. What these officers fail to understand is that Jesus wasn’t just a leader, He was a Servant-leader. The best form of leadership quality that will ever exist on Earth. In my opinion, for officers of the law to be such, they must not forget that: firstly, they are human and so are those whom they serve-be gentle; secondly, they are a servant of the people-serve them and not yourself, and finally, be humble. When this form of leadership quality is practised, Robert K. Greenleaf states that, “This philosophy and set of practices aims to enrich the lives of individuals, and builds better organizations which will ultimately create a more just and caring world.”
For now, we can only dream of such a world where our officers are servant-leaders and not autocratic enforcers. Until then, I will continue to pray for our officers to find their way back to morality and I do ask that you all continue to pray as well.
