Do You Love Your Neighbor? Your ACTUAL neighbor?
Do You Love Your Neighbor? Your ACTUAL neighbor?
“Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”” Mark 12:29-31 (NLT) Do You Love Your Neighbor? Serve Day.
Our 3rd India Training today was awesome. We arrived having no idea what to expect, and split up into groups to go out into the community and serve. Some went to a convalescent home, others to the streets to feed homeless people or the beach to pick up trash. I was ecstatic when I found out that my group was going to play with little kiddos at a learning center in Costa Mesa! This center, tucked away on a residential street, is run by a phenomenal couple with a heart full of Christ's love. They organize after-school programs, including homework help, Zumba classes, music lessons, arts and crafts, games, and Bible stories, for preschoolers to grade school kids. We spent two hours just playing games with a bunch of kids, and honestly, spending time with little ones brings me so much joy. It's so sweet to be blessed by their little smiles, seeing big siblings holding the hands of their younger brothers and sisters, and the laughter and fun in simple games. Not only does the center offer a safe place for kids to come, learn, and grow, but the cool thing is that parents and families are encouraged to get involved and help out too. Every parent gives just two hours of their time a week to contribute to the center's activities, and once every few months, couples can come for a date night complete with child care to give the parents some much needed quality time. This is the church in action. Marriages are being strengthened, children struggling in school can receive extra help in a place where they are loved and valued, and God is working in the hearts of the next generation. I am so encouraged by what God is doing within this community, and bonding with my India teammates while serving was such an amazing opportunity. This one tiny girl, probably two or three years old, stole my heart today. She was wearing this adorable striped beanie with pom-poms and was truly beautiful with her big green eyes. Though she didn't say much, she charmed everyone with her friendliness, and jumped straight into my open arms. As I held her, smiled, and laughed, I just began to pray that God would guide her to become a woman of faith one day. The warmth of her itty-bitty smile and spirit brightened my day, and reminded me that He will richly and abundantly bless those who give freely of themselves. I hope that she falls in love with Christ and lives a life set apart for the gospel one day. So I'll admit, this journey as part of the RH India Team has not always been easy. This past week was tough and I felt the doubts and fears creep in. But then, as I find delight in His presence and peace that these challenges force me to depend on the Almighty Father, I remember that it is a privilege to serve God's people and His Kingdom. As I laugh hysterically with my amazing teammate Carolyn at every meeting and am blessed by the team unity, I feel the subtle yet strong affirmation that I am right where I need to be and that God is working even when I cannot see it. There is so much going on in this season of my life, but I know these good things are opportunities for growth, relationships, and sacrifice. Father, keep my eyes above the waves. When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace. For I am Yours, and You are mine. You are enough. You are in control. And I have hope because of You. Psalm 61:2, "When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I." Philippians 1:6, "Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
