EWH's Summer Institutes are two-month service abroad programs for undergraduates, graduate students, and young professionals in STEM fields. The Summer Institutes place participants in the hospitals and clinics of low-resource countries where they repair equipment, conduct preventative maintenance, take inventories, and train staff on how to maintain old and operate new equipment.
As part of our effort to evaluate our Institute programs, Engineering World Health regularly surveys past participants on a variety of topics, including education, volunteer work, and professional experience. Find out what our Alumni had to say for our 15 Year Census!

Umber, a 2018 participant in Guatemala, shared her story:
“It's been truly rewarding working alongside my peers as well as the RIT group during my stay in Guatemala. EWH has provided me the opportunity to showcase my strengths as a Biomedical Engineer and face my weaknesses in real life hospital settings. In this photo, I was given one of the very few baby incubators in the hospital that would not warm up. I felt an immense amount of pressure and was worried that I would only make it worse, but knew that it was worth trying if it meant it could eliminate stress on the hospital staff. Luckily, I was able to resolve the issue by replacing a fuse and cleaning the interior fan inside. Through this, warm heat was able to circulate throughout the incubator. The problem was solved, and the Maternity Department were very happy to have it fixed. It was an amazing feeling to be able to make a difference for these babies, and I am thankful for this experience and look forward to returning to the program to help other developing countries.”
