"100-year battle to save the American Chestnut" The American Chestnut was once abundant in the Eastern forests of the U.S., but since the blight of the early 20th century, American Chestnuts are dwindling. Dr. William Powell, of the State University of New York- Environmental Science & Forestry, spoke on campus. He discussed his team’s work with biotechnology to find blight-resistant genes in hopes of restoring American Chestnuts to their former glory in Eastern forests. The lecture, which was sponsored by the Biology Club and a part of the Campus Artist and Lecture Series, was attended by more than 60 students, faculty, staff and community members. Some attendees even drove 150 miles roundtrip from Elmira, New York, to attend the lecture.

Freshman Service Learning Day Before the first day of classes began, about 700 students, mostly freshmen, gave back to their community in TSU’s Service Learning Day. This event introduces new students to Nashville through service. Twenty-five local nonprofits benefited from the event, which included tree plantings around campus and the community. As part of the students’ coursework, they will continue to do community service throughout the semester.

Kendrick Park Arboretum More than 20 students, staff and community members planted 56 trees to create the Kendrick Park Arboretum. Junior high and high school students also helped. The project turned a mostly barren field in to a young forest. The site was chosen because of its accessibility to the community and its central location among several trails. The arboretum will also work as a learning experience for the Sheridan community about which trees grow best in the difficult conditions of Sheridan.

Tree canopy visualization and tree identification through geo-technology The students of Geospatial Information Systems Professor Scott Sires’ class put their skills to use on the campus trees. Twelve students worked with remote sensing technology to create a visualization of the college’s tree canopy. In another class, 11 students collected data for a tree inventory in high-traffic areas of campus. This inventory will be used to create a comprehensive inventory of the campus trees.

Students collaborate with School for the Blind to create tree education audio files Creating audio files about trees for blind students to learn about trees is definitely a unique service learning project, but Butler University pushed it to the next level. Students in the World of Plants class worked with students from the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to create audio files describing the science, history and ways to identify trees from a sighted and visually impaired perspective. The students worked together for two months on these audio files. The process included journaling about the experience and social events for the students to get to know one another. The Butler students also assisted in the ISBVI greenhouse as part of the community service element of the class.
