"100-year battle to save the American Chestnut" The American Chestnut was once abundant in the Eastern forests of the U.S., but since the blight of the early 20th century, American Chestnuts are dwindling. Dr. William Powell, of the State University of New York- Environmental Science & Forestry, spoke on campus. He discussed his team’s work with biotechnology to find blight-resistant genes in hopes of restoring American Chestnuts to their former glory in Eastern forests. The lecture, which was sponsored by the Biology Club and a part of the Campus Artist and Lecture Series, was attended by more than 60 students, faculty, staff and community members. Some attendees even drove 150 miles roundtrip from Elmira, New York, to attend the lecture.

As part of the students’ coursework, they will continue to do community service throughout the semester.

Kendrick Park Arboretum More than 20 students, staff and community members planted 56 trees to create the Kendrick Park Arboretum. Junior high and high school students also helped. The project turned a mostly barren field in to a young forest. The site was chosen because of its accessibility to the community and its central location among several trails. The arboretum will also work as a learning experience for the Sheridan community about which trees grow best in the difficult conditions of Sheridan.
