A recent post on Colonel’s blog made me realise a small misinterpretation in my translation of Apocalypse Never. Where in the English version, Seryozha finds condoms in his bathroom, it turns out he’s actually meant to find hair bands. The word used in the Japanese script is “ゴム” ("gomu"), which can mean a variety of things, like rubber, eraser, gum, condoms, and latex produced from tree sap. HOWEVER, the word intended was “ヘアゴム” ("hair gomu"), which means hair band.

“I recently noticed that the "gomu" that was thrown away in the trash can of the English version of Apocalypse Never was translated as a "condom"... It was meant to be a "hair gomu" or a "hair band"...!!!! A RUBBER BAND FOR HOLDING YOUR HAIR BACK!!!!

But I found it really amusing so I don’t care if it’s left like that!! It honestly made me burst out laughing. But now I’m really curious, what would have caused a situation where something like this would have been tossed in the bin? Who threw it away? Was it used or unused?? I hope people will enjoy the slightly-adult English version of “Apocalypse Never”. (*_ _)

It seems like the English version of Seryozha has a lot more to worry about than his Japanese counterpart! As the big brother, he can’t help but be filled with dread I imagine.
