got a national theatre at home subscription and I have so many PLAYS to watch now. here are my two reviews of what I watched yday which ended up being an excellent double bill, vanya and the other place (both adaptations, both doing some stuff with on-stage depictions of disability, both family dramas)
vanya — andrew scott playing every single role around a set of lightswitches, mirrors and doors. incredible feat of set design, writing and of course performance. I loved this. I will be thinking about this for a long time. didn't go in expecting a startlingly beautiful exploration of Irish dialects but I got it. a power of birds indeed. more besides too. I think my favourite depiction was Maureen. main let down was some ableist playing-up of speech and mannerisms associated with learning disability for comedic value. also not sure Scott acting out having sex with himself quite worked but I appreciate that they gave it a red hot go, twice
the other place — retelling of antigone, plus some extra incest. tobias menzies (chris/creon) is killer in this. emma d'arcy is good but I struggled (and this will sound familiar) with some of the autistic mannerisms they adopted for annie (antigone), not quite sure if I'd call it ableist exactly but something in the performance caused some friction for me. maybe just a personal reaction. alison oliver (izzy/ismene) is the standout for me here, she shoulders a hugely difficult role and successfully makes izzy loveable and charming and infuriating. nina sosanya is great but I felt a twinge of sadness wondering why I always see her in longsuffering maternal roles. some of the writing felt like cheap laughs. the spitting-in-mouth scene was cool but I would personally have directed menzies to open his mouth more tremulously and reverently.
Trying to think. What if I changed ricanya from open attraction to its complicated ? But idk. I cant see a world where she doesn't kiss ricardo in the hospital and I cant see her not going to visit her best friend in the hospital after kicking his ass. And I cant see her being like its complicated... at the beach once she's already kissed him... so I think they're just going to keep making out in every room + surface of rangers hq in retribution !
He's so cute 🥺 always happy to see us!
“Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em” - A phrase originating in WW2 encouraging soldiers to take cigarette breaks whenever they could, and to make use of resources while they still had them.
This edit is Andrew Scott smoking in films, shows, and a music video :) - Yes, the algo won’t like this one, but that’s okay, because I post for me and me alone 🥰
I’ve always loved the “Goody Two Shoes” lyrics - “No one’s gonna tell me // What’s wrong and what’s right // Or tell me who to eat with, sleep with // Or that I’ve won the big fight, big fight” 🔥
Hell yeah.
WIP... I'm intrigued by 'Vanya' - mainly because it takes me straight to the umbrella academy! What can you tell us?
Vanya is only in the character creating stage, I'll drop her info here, the story will be built around her.
Vanya- common name
Elara- Magic Power name
Arcane Ice elf
Age 23
Female
She comes from the land of Veles. It is a land of permafrost and towering ice crystals. Sharp ice shards surround her family's home like a mote.
She is thin and small for an elf her age, but tall for in human age comparison. The has a slender angled face with striking purple eyes that glow softly when she is casting spells. Her skin is extremely pale except her cheeks, nose tip and tips of her ear that are usually pink from the cold.
Her hair is waist length, silvery white with soft purple steaks. She wears it typically in a braid as is elven tradition for fighters and adventurers.
She wears heavy silk fur lined robes embroidered with arcane runes. Thick leather boots and a wool scarf her mother made for her.
Her magic specialty is Arcane Ice magic, specifically Frost weaving with divination. She can manipulate the cold and sometimes unbidden can see echoes of the future in fresh snow or falling snow.
She has a locket that she carries with her everywhere. It contains a forever flame. Its a spark from her home fire that keeps her warm in any weather. It is also engraved on the inside with her Magic name.
She can speak the common language, Elvish, and a form of Russian.
She is even tempered and sarcastic to a fault. She loves to have fun when she can but can focus intensely when in battle or learning new things.
Her strengths include being magically disciplined, fiercely loyal and being able to intuitively grasp complex magic.
Her weaknesses are being physically weaker than most, she can be naively trusting at times, and can occasionally be overcome by her own magical abilities.
