On a new species of vampire crab from the  Geosesarma foxi species-group (Crustacea: Brachyura: Sesarmidae), northern Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: 

Geosesarma bunian, new species, is described from Gunung Jerai in the northern Malaysian state of Kedah. Collected from over 1,100 m above sea level, the species is a member of the G. foxi (Kemp, 1918) species group, and is the fifth species known. Morphologically, G. bunian is closest to G. faustum Ng, 2017 from Penang, but the species can be distinguished by characters of the male first gonopod, male chelae and live coloration.

Mangrove Tree Crab (Aratus pisonii)

...a species of semi-terrestrial Sesarmid crab which inhabits mangrove trees in tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas, ranging from Florida to Brazil and Nicaragua to Peru. A. pisonii typically inhabits red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) but is known to inhabit white and black mangroves as well, it will ascend to these trees when the tide rises and descend to the mud when the tide goes down. 

Mangrove tree crabs feed mostly on the leaves of the mangrove trees they inhabit. However, they are omnivores and will prefer animal matter if possible, typically feeding on small invertebrates and carrion.

Face-banded Crab (Perisesarma sp.) Mandai Mangrove, 4th October 2012

The Face-banded Crabs of Mandai Mangrove (and other mangrove habitats of Singapore) are among several mangrove inhabitants discussed at the upcoming 2013 Mandai Mangrove and Mudflat Workshop.

The presentations at this workshop will showcase the interdisciplinary importance of Mandai, and include botany, ecology, seagrass, crabs, bivalves, insects, birds, geography, geomorphology, sea level rise, biochemistry and management. More information about the programme is available here.

There are two species of Face-banded Crab in Singapore mangroves: Perisesarma indiarum and Perisesarma eumolpe.
