Chrono Hustle #30 A Twist of Fate
“So, who was behind sending the Atlanteans to that planet, not to mention me?” Abigail Esau asked as she sat down at the briefing room table in the starship. Also at the table were Jack Masterson, Deanna, and the captain of the ship, Benjamin Grayson. “We don’t know that yet,” Jack said. “Or why for that matter.” “It’s also not especially relevant at the moment,” Benjamin said. “Right now our first priority is getting back to Earth in order to try and fend off the invasion.” “Something we now have a chance of succeeding at, with the Atlanteans back,” Jack said. “I hope you’re right,” Benjamin said. “So, what are our orders?” Mary Bishop asked after Melinda Summers returned to 1876 through the time door. “Harkon wants us to try bringing them out of stasis early, one at a time, and bring them into custody,” Melinda said. “Will that work?” “It might. There’s always the risk though that if we try messing with them, they will all wake up early.” Jack, Deanna, and Abigail followed Benjamin back onto the bridge. “Anything to report?” Benjamin asked. “We have been picking up some strange readings,” the science officer, Cerise Martel, said. “They don’t look like anything I’ve seen before, but they also don’t seem to be having any noticeable effect on us.” “I am assuming they are just some aspect of superspace travel which we do not yet understand,” the first officer, Katherine Tartovsky, said. “May I have a look?” Deanna asked. “Be my guest,” Benjamin said. Deanna walked over to the science station, and looked over the readings. “Drop us out of superspace immediately,” she said. “Sir?” the pilot, Chuck Banman, asked. “Do it,” Benjamin said. “Yes, sir,” Chuck said. “What’s going on?” Jack asked. “The readings are similar to the readings given off by the time doors,” Deanna said. “Time doors?” Katherine asked. “That’s classified,” Jack said. “Well, we may need to be brought into the loop,” Cerise said. “Based on these readings, we are no longer in our own time.” “When are we?” Benjamin asked. “Based on star positions, we appear to be approximately 212 years in the future,” Chuck said. “So, 2228?” Benjamin asked. “Agent Harris, see if you can pick up any transmissions from Earth, or potentially Human colonies or ships, and see if you can confirm that.” “Yes, sir,” Wesley Harris, the communications officer, said. “Hmm.” Nikola Tesla looked at one of the stasis pods before checking the attached computer console. “It will be tricky to open them one at a time. They are all connected, and programmed so that if one of them is opened, they all will.” “So, you can’t do it?” Melinda asked. “I didn’t say that. There does seem to be a sequence that will allow them to be opened one at a time, which was programmed in for certain types of emergencies.” “That’s good.” “But there is no way to access that sequence without waking them all up.” “So, we have to figure out the correct sequence,” Melinda said. “That should be doable. We just need to identify all of the agents, and figure out what order makes the most sense.” Jack paced back and forth on the bridge, waiting. “Masterson, do you have any useful intel on this era?” Benjamin asked. “Not as such,” Jack said. “The closest I’ve been to this year is 2347.” “I have some bad news,” Wesley said. “I’ve been combing through the communication signals I can find, and it seems Earth is under the control of the Caldore Imperium.” “Who are the Caldore Imperium?” Benjamin asked. “The invasion fleet that we need to stop in our time,” Jack said. “That’s them.” “And we have another problem,” Jiang Teng, the tactical officer, said. “Four ships just dropped out of superspace nearby.” “Are they Caldore?” Katherine asked. “They don’t match the Caldore ships from our year,” Jiang said. “And I doubt their ships have changed this drastically, even in two centuries.” “They are hailing us,” Wesley said. “So, who do we all have?” Harkon Smith asked as Melinda entered his office. “There are fifteen agents,” Melinda said. “I recognize nine of them. These are the ones I don’t.” She handed a tablet to Harkon who looked it over. “There’s only one here I don’t recognize,” Harkon said. “I’ll put together profiles on the five I do, you can create profiles on the ones you recognize, and then we’ll have to go through them, and figure out what makes the most sense.” “And the agent we don’t recognize?” “I’ll check with the other former TRD agents on base, and see if anyone else can help.” Jack watched as the viewscreen at the front of the bridge switched to a video communication from the alien ship, aliens which he instantly recognized. “Welcome to our time, Humans of the past,” one of the aliens said. “Surrender or be destroyed.” “What do you want from us?” Benjamin asked. “You have rescued the Atlanteans, which left us no choice but to remove you from your time,” the alien said. “Or we could make a deal,” Jack said. “My people have two members of your race in custody. If you let us go, we could return them to you.” “I have no idea of whom you are even speaking,” the alien said. “Assuming what you say is even true, there is no reason for me to believe that those individuals are even from this timeline, or from my era. Now, I repeat, surrender or be destroyed. You have one minute to comply.” The screen went back to a view of space. “So, who do we all have?” Mary asked, looking at the list of people. She was seated in the conference room, along with Melinda, Harkon, Philip Wilson, Dorian Winters, Jaclyn Monroe, Ike Salazar, and Jeri Quill. “Well, I’m fairly certain that Mason Hershfeld is one of the first ones,” Melinda said. “He’s an engineer with an expertise in stasis technology.” “The only question is if he’s first in case work needs to be done on the stasis pods, or if someone else is first in order to make sure everything is safe,” Harkon said. “I’m guessing either Mike Edwards or Maxine Emerson are fairly high on the list for that reason,” Melinda said. “Looks like there’s a doctor in this group as well,” Jeri said. “Brandon Kvarth. He’s probably higher on the list as well.” “And what about this mystery individual?” Philip asked. “Who’s he?” “No one here on base recognizes him,” Harkon said. “So we have nothing to go on.” “And I notice Tom is amongst the group,” Mary said. “I can’t imagine he’s too high on the list.” “Maybe, maybe not,” Melinda said. “He’s not especially competent, but he has spent time in that era, and has a cover identity there.” “So, what do we do?” Abigail asked. “We need to get back to our own time,” Benjamin said. “We can’t do that if we’re captured.” “How do we do that even if we get away?” Katherine asked. “I don’t know, exactly,” Jack said. “I mean, if we can get access to stasis technology, we can put you in stasis until 2348, and then send you back that way.” “That’s a lot of stasis pods,” Benjamin said. “And there’s a lot that could go wrong, not to mention the loss of the ship.” “Yeah, I wish I knew what method was used to get us to this era,” Jack said. “Deanna?” “I am unfamiliar with this form of time travel,” Deanna said. “However I do have an idea how we can get away from these aliens.” “We’ll start with that,” Benjamin said. “Martel, see if you can figure out what happened to us though.” “Yes, sir,” Cerise said. “Hmm, these three are just low ranking agents,” Melinda said, looking at the list. “They are probably just there to add to the number, and are likely amongst the last to be awoken.” “Although there is still the question of what order those three should go in,” Harkon said. “There’s still that question for everyone,” Philip said. “We’ve mostly grouped them into three groups, top, middle, and bottom, but we haven’t figured out the order within those groups.” “Not to mention the mystery individual,” Mary said. “There’s no telling which group he’s even in.” “No matter which order we go in, there’s the possibility we’ll choose wrong,” Melinda said. “We’ll just have to be prepared for that,” Harkon said. Abigail watched as the alien reappeared onscreen. She found it fascinating how much this species looked like the velociraptors from Jurassic Park. “Well, Captain, do you surrender?” the alien captain asked. “Under one condition,” Benjamin said. “And what condition is that?” “That condition is that you return us to our own time.” The alien started making a sound that Abigail assumed was a laugh. “After all the trouble to bring you here, why would we send you back?” “Because, otherwise we’ll just have to get back on our own,” Benjamin said. “Do it, now.” Jiang fired the weapons, which Deanna had mystically energized, at all four of the alien ships. “Their sensors have been overloaded,” Deanna said. “They can’t see us.” “Banman, set a course for… Maltork Four,” Benjamin said. “Yes, sir?” Chuck said. “Problem, Chuck?” Jack asked. “I know, it’s not the best planet to visit, but at least it’s a planet where you generally know where you stand,” Benjamin said. “And where is that?” Jack asked. “Oh, you’ll like it,” Wesley said. “It’s an entire planet of criminals.” “Okay Mr. Tesla, please open up the stasis pod containing Tom Eastwood,” Melinda said as she pointed her energy pistol at Tom. Mary, Philip, Dorian, Jaclyn, Ike, Ohm, and the clone of Mary were all there as well. They each had an energy pistol in hand, and were each keeping an eye on two of the other stasis pods, in case something went wrong. Nikola deactivated the stasis pod, and it opened, as Tom woke up. No one else did. Tom slowly got up, but stopped as he noticed the situation. “What the hell?” he asked. “Morning sunshine,” Melinda said. Jack, Deanna, and Abigail stepped onto the teleporter along with Jane Anderson, the chief of security, and five of her security personnel. “Just remember, you three are here to observe,” Jane said. “I’m in charge and you will follow my orders.” “Of course,” Jack said. “Okay, teleport us down,” Jane said, before the door burst open. “Wait, I’m coming with,” Alec Riker said, as he came running in. “Holder, where the hell have you been?” Jane asked. “They knocked me out and locked me in a closet,” Alec said, pointing at Jack and Deanna. “His name isn’t Holder, he’s a CIA operative,” Jack said. “Here to see how the ship operates, and report back on it.” “True,” Alec said. “Ian Holder isn’t my real name, I mean really? But I can be of use here.” “Sure, why not, it’s not like we have any semblance of order here anyway,” Jane said. “Really?” Alec asked. “No,” Jane said. “Ulrich, go bring this guy to the brig. I just wish the captain would let us do that with Masterson too.” “Hello Agent Eastwood,” Harkon said as he walked up to the holding cell where Tom had been placed. “Harkon Smith, how far you’ve fallen,” Tom said. “You used to be the deputy director of the TRD, now you’re just the leader of a small team of ragtag misfits.” “You just say that because you don’t know who’s all on the team.” “I mean, sure, Melinda is a fine agent. But Jack is just a con artist, and Mary’s just a simple farm girl. Sesla can’t be trusted, assuming she’s even recovered from the virus we sent. Even Nikola Tesla is far past his prime.” “I think you’d be surprised,” Harkon said. “But I’m not here to talk about my team, I’m here to talk about yours.” “You don’t know who to wake up next, do you?” Tom asked. “Well, I’m certainly not going to tell you.” “Not to me, maybe, but we do have other methods of finding out,” Harkon said. “Meet our new friend, Merlin.” As he said that, Merlin stepped out of the shadows. “Well, we’re not exactly friends,” Merlin said. “But for now at least, we are allies.” “So, what exactly are we doing down here?” Abigail asked Jack as they sat down in a bar. Deanna and one of the security people, Violet Harper, were also with them. “Gathering intel on the current socio-political environment in this era,” Jack said. “Yeah, but we’re in a bar,” Abigail said. “It’s the best place to learn about most things,” Jack said. “Wait, how old are you again?” “I’m 20,” Abigail said. “I don’t know what the legal drinking age is here, but it’s 18 where I live. I’ve been to bars before.” “There isn’t really a drinking age on this planet,” Violet said. “There are very few laws, and the ones that exist aren’t enforced much.” “Do they understand English here?” Jack asked. “Because I want to go take our drink orders.” “This bar is run by a Larusian,” Violet said. “They can learn languages telepathically.” “Telepathy?” Jack asked. “That’s worrying.” “Just language, they can’t read regular memories,” Violet said. “Ah, okay, weird, but okay,” Jack said. Harkon waited outside, hearing a scream from Tom, followed by silence. After another minute, Merlin came out. “What did you learn?” Harkon asked. “He only knows the next person in line,” Merlin said. “Not the complete order.” “And who is next?” “Mason Hershfeld.” Jack walked up to the bar, where a blue skinned bartender was working. “Hello,” Jack said. “I’d like to order a few drinks.” “Do you know what kind of drinks?” the bartender asked. “I’m Lorik, by the way. Owner of this fine establishment.” “Good to meet you Lorik, I’m Jack. I’m not from around here though, so I’m not too familiar with the drinks.” “Well, I can recommend the Alterian Ale,” Lorik said. “Four of those, then. And maybe some information.” “What sort of information?” Melinda and her team once again prepared to wake up another one of the TRD agents, Mason Hershfeld. “Ready?” Nikola asked. “Ready,” Melinda said. Nikola turned off the stasis pod, and it opened up, with Mason waking up. The other stasis pods all remained closed. “What’s going on?” Mason asked as he woke up and looked around. “Oh… shit.” “So, what did you find out?” Abigail asked as Jack returned to the table with drinks. “Patience dear,” Deanna said. “He will tell us shortly.” “Well, between what Lorik said, and what I’ve been learning with my powers, I’ve got some decent knowledge going.” “Powers?” Violet asked. “That’s classified,” Jack said. “Really?” Abigail asked. “Eh, technically my entire existence is classified at this point,” Jack said. “But that’s not important. So, anyway, what I’ve learned is that those raptor looking aliens are called Palore, but the ships we encountered were not from this time. They use some kind of time travel method that involves manipulating superspace in certain regions.” “So, I assume it was when we were heading back to Earth that we passed through that area,” Deanna said. “How much of that did you learn from the bartender?” Violet asked. “The name Palore,” Jack said. “Some other stuff as well, but that’s the most relevant. Most of the rest was my powers kicking in.” “Can you get us back to our time?” Abigail asked. “I have a few ideas,” Jack said. “Hershfeld broke pretty quickly,” Harkon told Melinda. “We didn’t even need to send in Merlin.” “So, who’s the next person?” Melinda asked. “Mike Edwards.” “Makes sense, although it’s a bit unfortunate, as I’m not sure he’ll break,” Melinda said. “One step at a time,” Harkon said. “One step at a time.” “Okay,” Jack said as he sat down at the briefing room table with Deanna, Abigail, Benjamin, and most of the senior staff of the starship. “The Palore should have a ship in this time that can manipulate superspace for time travel. We need to take control of it, set it up in an area of space, and then travel through superspace in that area.” “We encountered four of their ships,” Katherine said. “Do all of them have that capability, or do we have to figure out which one we want to take?” “I don’t know yet,” Jack said. “And will we know how to set it to return to the right time?” Benjamin asked. “I don’t know yet,” Jack said. “How do we even take one of their ships?” Jiang asked. “I don’t know,” Jack said. “Unfortunately, unless someone else has any other ideas, this is our best bet,” Benjamin said. Melinda readied her energy pistol as Nikola opened the stasis pod. Mike Edwards woke up and looked around. “Agent Summers, I see you and your people have discovered our base,” Mike said. “Yes, and we’re taking you all into custody,” Melinda said. “Good luck with that,” Mike said. “Eastwood and Hershfeld may have broken, but you’ll get no information from me.” And with that, he bit down on something, and his body immediately went slack. “Damn,” Melinda said. “What happened?” Mary asked. “Some kind of poison capsule,” Melinda said. “Which means this is now a guessing game again.” “The problem is that the information your security chief gathered on the Palore ships is about the ships native to this time,” Jack said. “But we don’t have a whole lot more to go on,” Benjamin said. “Unless your powers have revealed anything more.” “Not as of yet, no,” Jack said. “And I suppose we do have limited time. So, what did she find out anyway?” “I’ve been analyzing the information she gather,” Taro Tanaka, the chief engineer said. “And I believe I have discovered an exploit.” “What sort of exploit?” Jack asked. “We should be able to teleport a small group aboard, even with their anti-teleporter fields up,” Taro said. “I suggest myself and my friends do this,” Jack said. “If we get let behind it’s not a big deal.” “Why is that?” Katherine asked. “That’s classified,” Jack said. “Of course it is,” Katherine said. “Are you certain?” Nikola asked. “We have to choose someone,” Melinda said. “I’d say we go with Maxine Emerson.” “Alright,” Nikola said. “I’m waking her up.” The stasis pod opened, and she started waking up, but so did the other eleven remaining pods. “Stun them,” Melinda said as she fired her energy pistol at Maxine, but the shot was stopped by a personal forcefield. Maxine picked up her own pistol and fired it at Melinda, who ducked out of the way behind a computer console. It seemed everyone else was encountering the same issue, as weapon’s fire filled the room. “Okay, we’re ready whenever you are,” Jack said over the comm, as he, Deanna, and Abigail stepped onto the teleporter. “Understood,” Benjamin said from the bridge. “We’re about to drop out of superspace. As soon as we do so, teleport them over to one of the Palore ships, Agent Tanaka.” “Yes, sir,” Taro said from behind the teleporter controls. “And now,” Benjamin said. “Sending them over,” Taro said. Jack felt the sensation of being teleported, although it felt a bit different than usual. Mary peaked above the stasis pod she was hiding behind, and fired off a few shots before dropping back down to avoid the return fire. She was preparing for another attempt, when she felt an explosion, and sunlight began streaming in. “Let’s get out of here,” said a voice, which Mary did not recognize. Mary went back up to get off another few shots, but she watched as several of the TRD agents managed to get outside. “That was colder than the other times,” Abigail said as they appeared on the Palore ship. “Presumably an effect of getting us past the anti-teleporter fields,” Jack said. “Do we at least know if this ship has what we need?” Abigail asked. “I am sensing something temporal,” Deanna said. “So I believe this is the correct ship.” “Hmm, and I think I know which way to go,” Jack said. “Your knowledge powers are giving you a layout of the ship?” Abigail asked. “Partial layout, enough to get where we need to go,” Jack said. “So follow me.” Melinda looked out the hole that had been blown in the wall. The escaped TRD agents were long gone. “How many got away?” she asked. “Looks like five of them,” Mary said as she counted up the agents they had captured. “Where would they go though?” Philip asked. “They have no allies in this time.” “That we know of,” Melinda said. “And the agent we aren’t familiar with is one of the ones that escaped,” Mary said. “So that is yet another thing to worry about.” “Wait, stop,” Jack said, holding up his hand. “Someone is about to come out of that door.” The door in question immediately opened, and a Palore walked out, which Deanna blasted with a magic spell to knock it out. “Your powers let you know about that?” Deanna asked. “Yeah,” Jack said. “You’re getting more powerful.” “Yeah, I suppose I am,” Jack said. Mary looked at the ground outside the hole in the wall. “Can you track them?” Melinda asked. “Maybe,” Mary said. “I mean, not as well as my dad could, but I can give it a try. Is the clone of him ready yet?” “It should be shortly,” Melinda said. “But we don’t want to bring the clone in on this stuff.” “Yeah, I know,” Mary said. “I’ll see what I can do.” “Can you put up a protective shield around us?” Jack asked as the elevator doors were about to open. “Of course,” Deanna said. The shield went up as the doors opened, and Jack strode out onto the bridge. “Hello, good to see you all,” he said as he looked around at the Palore bridge crew. “This ship is now ours.” “You think the three of you can really take control of our ship?” the captain asked. “Guards, take them out.” The guards fired at them, but the shots were absorbed by the magic shield. “Deanna, we need to know their language,” Jack said. “Right,” Deanna said as she walked over to one of the guards, and kissed them. “Okay, I have learned the language.” “Okay, give the knowledge to Abigail, and she can start looking through the computer systems for what we need.” “Wait, does that mean she’s going to kiss me again?” Abigail asked. Mary followed the trail east out of town. They were headed towards the rock formations. There would be plenty of areas to hide over there, and it would be difficult to track them. She relayed that information to Melinda over the comm. “Keep at it,” Melinda said. “I’ll send Philip and Dorian to join you, and I’ll be along as well, as soon as we’re finished with transporting the ones we did catch back to base.” “Understood,” Mary said, as she continued following the trail. Abigail typed away at the computer. Even now knowing the language, it was still an unfamiliar system, so it was taking some time to get the hang of it. “So, how’s it going?” Jack asked. “Umm, slowly,” Abigail said. “I mean, I’ve found the system for the time travel device, but I’m still figuring out how to set it properly.” “Can you set it to jump to just after we left?” Jack asked. “I… I don’t think so,” Abigail said. “I think it can only jump a set amount of time, and since we’ve been here for a couple hours, the same amount of time will have transpired back home. The only thing is making sure it’s set to go backwards, not forwards.” “Ah, yeah, that would be best,” Jack said. Mary tried to search for any sign of tracks in the rocks, but was having trouble, when she heard movement behind her. She swung around, bringing up her energy pistol. “Don’t shoot, it’s just us,” Philip said. Dorian was next to him. “How goes the tracking?” Dorian asked. “I think I lost the trail,” Mary said. “No, wait.” She crouched down, as she saw a bit of dirt on an otherwise clean rock surface. “They went this way.” “Okay, I’ve got it activated,” Abigail said. “Then I am sending a message to Captain Grayson, letting him know it is time for him to go,” Deanna said. “You are staying behind?” the Palore Captain asked. “That is most interesting.” “Don’t worry, we know your ship has shields that protect it from changes to the timeline,” Jack said. “We don’t have to worry about being erased.” “Maybe not,” the Captain said. “But how do you expect to escape from our ship afterwards?” Mary, Philip, and Dorian looked over the edge of a cliff face, down at the camp below. The escaped TRD agents were down there, but they were not alone. There was a group of Native Americans down there with them. “I count twelve Indians,” Dorian said. “So that means seventeen people in total.” “What are they doing with the Indians though?” Mary asked. “That’s what I want to know.” “I’m rather curious myself,” Melinda said as she joined the group. “I recognize a few of the Pomo down there. They are allies of the TRD.” “What kind of allies?” Philip asked. “Mostly we would go to them for intel,” Melinda said. “But who knows what they’ll be doing with them now. Either way though, we need to be very careful. One of the Pomo down there is the ancestor of a fairly important historical figure, so if something goes wrong, this could have a disastrous impact on history.” “They have gone through, and returned to their own time,” Deanna said. “Excellent,” Jack said. “Woah, that felt weird.” “What?” Abigail asked. “What felt weird?” “My knowledge powers just kicked in hardcore, and I felt the timeline changing.” “Changing how?” Abigail asked. “Did we fix it?” Melinda snuck down into the camp in the darkness of the night. There was an agent on watch, but she was able to get up behind him. She turned her energy pistol to low level stun, so it would not make any noise, and shot him three times, causing him to slump over. “The guard is down,” Melinda whispered over the comm. “Dorian, you come grab him and get him out of here.” “I’m still not certain of this plan,” Philip said as Dorian left for the camp. “Yeah, but you didn’t have a better one,” Mary said. “And we don’t want to risk waiting too long.” “Yeah, but there’s five of them we’re trying to capture, and only four of us,” Philip said. “Ohm is on his way,” Mary said. “Yeah, but until he gets here, it’s just the four of us,” Philip said. Melinda entered the tent, where three of the agents were sleeping. She shot one of them twice, then the second, then the third. “Mary, Philip, the next three are ready to go,” Melinda whispered over the comm. “Has Ohm arrived yet?” “Not yet,” Mary replied. “Well, you two grab the two in here, I’ll have to meet Ohm when he gets here,” Melinda said. “Until then, I still need to find the final agent.” “It’s the one we don’t recognize, isn’t it?” Philip asked. “Yep.” “Of course it is.” Ohm ran up to the place where he had been told to go. There was no one there, so he sat down and listened. He could hear people sleeping nearby, and one person moving around. He got up, and followed that sound. As he was nearing it, the sound stopped, briefly, before he heard it resume, behind him. He turned around, and in the dim light he could just barely make out Melinda. “Ohm, you made it, good stuff,” Melinda said. “Unfortunately we have a problem.” “What problem?” Ohm asked. “I can’t find the final agent,” Melinda said. “There’s an unconscious one in that tent, if you want to grab him and carry him back, but I don’t know where the final one went. I’ll search a bit more, but I don’t think he’s here.” Mary dropped the TRD agent she was carrying onto the ground in front of the time door. “People are heavy,” Philip said as he put down the agent he was carrying. “So, I guess we’ve successfully stopped this TRD incursion.” “Maybe, assuming Melinda manages to find the mystery agent.” “Yeah.” After searching the camp for hours, to no success, Melinda returned to the town, just as the sun was starting to rise. She was walking down the main road when she felt something off, and ducked, just as she heard a gunshot, and the bullet missed her by an inch. She looked around for cover, and dove behind a water trough, as more bullets went by. Melinda scanned the area with her eyes, looking for the source of the bullets. She quickly located the shooter on the roof of a building. It was not, however, the mystery TRD agent. Melinda readied her energy pistol, waited for the shooter to fire his last bullet, then stood up and shot him. He dropped off the front of the building, and fell to the ground. “We have all but one of you in custody now,” Harkon said as he sat down on a chair outside of Tom’s cell. “You’ve lost.” “That depends on who managed to escape,” Tom said. “Who was it?” “That is none of your concern,” Harkon said. “What is your concern is what you are going to do next?” “Rot in this cell, I guess,” Tom said. “At least until the TRD comes up with a new plan to defeat you.” “Do you really think that’s going to work better than this plan?” “Things used to be a lot simpler,” Tom said. “But ever since you went rogue, things have become more complicated, we’ve had to start looking at time travel in new and interesting ways. That’s something the TDD has been very helpful with, they understand the ins and outs of time travel much better than the TRD ever has. It’s only a matter of time until we figure out something to use against you.” “Maybe,” Harkon said. “But we’ve learned quite a bit as well.” “Well, I’ve got some good news, and some bad news,” Mary said as Melinda returned to the farm. “What’s the bad news?” Melinda asked. “I’ve been asking around town, and it seems the mystery agent bought a horse and left town.” “What’s the good news?” “He hired someone to try killing us before he left, which is the person you encountered, but as far as I know he just hired the one person.” “That’s a pretty low bar for good news,” Melinda said. “Yeah, but we work with what we have,” Mary said. To be continued…
