App Review: SetCPU for Root Users

SetCPU ist eine absolute Pflichtapp für alle Android-Handy Beistzer die Stromsparen wollen und ihr Handy gerootet haben. Mit SetCPU veränderst du die Taktung deines CPUs (übetakten oder untertakten) um die Leistung zuerhöhen oder die Batterie zu schonen, verfügbar ist das ganze für Motorola Droid, Nexus One, G1 , G2, Samsung Galaxy S, myTouch 4G, Motorola Xoom und viele andere Geräte.

Der Startscreen von SetCPU:

Auffallend ist die Große Zahl mit mhz Angabe. Dies ist der aktuelle CPU-Takt. Darunter ist die aktuelle Spannweite der möglichen Taktung angegeben (minimale Taktung und maximale Taktung). Diese beiden Faktoren sind änderbar mit verschieben der beiden Regler "Min." und "Max.". Unter dem Punkt Scaling kann man verschiedene Verhaltensmodien einstellen nach der die Taktung eingestellt wird, ist z.B. der Modus Performance aktiv wird immer auf maximal getaktet.

   conservative:

Ist nur bei manchen Kernels verfügbar und ist ähnlich wie ondemand. Jedoch wird die Taktung öfters aktualisiert. Dies führt dazu, dass der CPU-Takt schneller erhht bzw. gesenkt werden kann.

userspace:

Diese Methode wird noch nicht von SetCPU genutzt.

powersave:

Ist in nur bei manchen Kernels verfügbar, dieser Modus hält den CPU-Takt immer auf dem eingestellten Minimum.

ondemand:

Dies ist in vielen Stock-Kernels der eingestellte Modus. Wird eine höhere Taktung benötigt so wird aufgetaktet, gleiches gilt bei einer niedrigeren Taktung, hier wird jedoch logischer Weise abgetaktet.

performance:

Lässt die CPU-Taktung immer auf Maximal laufen.

Durch den Button "Set on Boot" können die Einstellungen gespeichert werden, sodass sie beim nächsten booten automatisch geladen werden und SetCPU die Taktung deiner CPU steuern kann.  ACHTUNG wenn du nicht weißt was du machst stelle die Taktung ersteinmal ohne ein haken bei "Set on Boot" ein, sonst kann es dazu kommen, dass dein Handy nicht mehr funktioniert.

Die nächste Funktion nennt sich Profiles. Hier kann man bestimmte Profile aktivieren, die automatisch bei bestimmten Ereignissen zum Einsatz kommen. Interesant ist hier die Funktion "Screen OFF", hierbei wird wenn man dieses Profil aktiviert hat, der CPU Takt bei abgeschaltenem Bildschirm vorzugsweise (zum Strom sparen) runtergetaktet. Wenn man dieses Profil aktiviert hat und gerne Musik hört, dann sollte man bei manchen Handy den CPU-Takt nicht unter 300Mhz fallen lassen, sonnst kann es zu einer ruckeligen Musikwiedergabe kommen.

Außerdem solltet ihr darauf achten, dass SetCPU von eurem Taskmanager/Taskkiler nicht gekillt oder beendet wird, sonst kann die App nicht richtig funktionieren

Rooting: What is it and how to do it

Rooting is the process of allowing certain apps to gain 'root' access to the system. Android is based on Linux, the computer operating system. And in Linux the 'root' user is allowed to modify and access all system files. Rooting your Android phone isn't a feature that comes with Android, it's exploiting the way the system works.

So when you root your phone, you're allowing certain apps to access and/or modify system files. Which apps need 'rooted' systems? Well there are a wide variety of apps that need root access:

Titanium Backup - one of the most popular root apps on the Market, this app uses it's root permissions to backup and remove system apps/apps that come preinstalled with the phone that nobody wants.

SetCPU - another very popular root app which allows you to overclock your phone. (Definition of overclocking here)

MyBackup Root - an app that uses it's root permissions to 'backup' your apps, data, and settings to your SD card so that they can be restored if anything happens

Root Explorer - another popular app that allows you to dive into the system files of your phone and modify/access them. Also allows you to access what's on the SD card of course.

Am I already rooted? Well if you installed SwiftDroid or OpenSwift then yes, you will already be rooted. If you see the Superuser app installed on your phone, then yes, you're rooted.

So if you decide that you would like to root your phone, here's how to do it:

Download z4root from here

Copy the file to your SD Card

Use file manager app to locate and install the app

Go to Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging and enable USB Debugging

Open the app from the app drawer and select 'Permanent Root'

The phone should now root and restart, and you will see the Superuser app in the app drawer

When you open an app that wants root access, a superuser request will appear. Superuser is an app that allows you to control which apps are allowed to have root permissions or not. When the popup appears, you can choose to allow the app root permissions, or deny it. If you deny it, then the app will have limited or no functionality.
