#setting is important

that’s… the literal duomo in the background. damn. i knew that loguetown was based off florence, but i never noticed the direct reference before.

for reference, this is what the duomo di firenze (florence cathedral) looks like irl.

as always, i’m struck by the amount of unique designs one piece has for its random, tiny background characters. it really adds to the flavor of its crowd scenes and makes each of its locations feel lived in.

the crowd in this loguetown panel has a distinctly “touristy” vibe, in my opinion. it’s because a lot of people are either carrying shopping bags or wearing backpacks. it gives the impression that loguetown’s economy is heavily based on tourism (maybe spurred on by people’s fascination with gol d. roger.) it fits, since it’s heavily inspired by florence, italy, which also had an economy strongly based on tourism.

syrup village establishing shot! so far in east blue we’ve had:

coastal farming rural village (windmill village/foosha)

suburban military center (shells town)

german town port city (orange town)

and now: pastoral village of triangular-roofed bungalows and a Big Mansion (syrup village)

orange town establishing shot! it has that distinctly medieval-german-town feel that sets it apart from the east blue towns we’ve seen so far. also, no people in the shot since they all evacuated — which stands out because one piece always goes out of its way to show background characters in shots like this. we’re supposed to notice that the place looks strangely empty even before we’re told what’s going on

shells town establishing shot! while one piece settings would get pretty wild once we hit the grand line, i really appreciate how each east blue town has its own unique design. windmill village is a rural farming town, whereas shells town is a more suburban location with practically no greenery.

appreciation for the foosha village establishing shot here. i’m particularly impressed by how all the bg characters have unique outfits on despite being tiny. i really like the dress the person with the broom is wearing.

if you need to write an essay on a book and you are having a hard time picking a specific topic, USE THE SETTING. i will die on this hill. setting is one of the most important parts of the book. even if it’s just really simple, it shapes the beliefs and motives of the characters. if the characters come from different places and it’s described well in the book, USE IT.

also there’s a lot more described about the setting indirectly because of characterization (yes i’m a history, mainly culture, and english lit nerd. shush)
