Convenience isn't bad because of some inherent value in toil or it rots your soul. Convenience is bad because it often comes at the cost of an exploited underclass. I don't care if someone wants to taxi their meal to their house instead of making it themselves or even driving to the restaurant themselves. I care that meal delivery apps underpay their workers (they don't even consider them their workers), provide no workplace protections, and prey on their desperation.

The desire for convenience is a morally neutral thing (no matter how many capitalists want their workers to see unproductivity or aversion to the "grind" as a moral failing). Companies that sell you only convenience by making it worse for yourself and for others are not.

one thing that i really enjoy about milchick is the consistency of his characterization. like, yeah, the "you must eradicate from yourself childish folly, you must abandon childish things" scene was stunning - but its impact would never have amounted to the same level if the show hadn't demonstrated already that he is a playful, fun-loving person.

yeah yeah evil middle management whatever milchick is constantly trying to insert Fun into the process, and while it's mostly corporate manipulation, corporate crucially does not approve of it. he is really putting too much effort into things. he dances during the Music/Dance Experience. sets up a scavenger hunt during the ORTBO when it could've been a powerpoint. the entire concept of an ORTBO actually. the bonfire. he reads out loud and does the voices. none of it ever goes well (what with the biting and the carrot penis etc) but he doesn't stop, even despite the negative feedback from the Board. he wants to be playful and childish so bad but he can't, and he keeps trying to provide that to the innies because he clearly wishes someone would do that for him, but they hate it, they don't appreciate it, and he takes it sooooo personally it's stupid

i want to set him loose in an arcade or something. with an escape room and a jungle gym. he would be in there for hours frolicking like a baby goat but nooo he has to go be evil. it's a 9 to 5. well, a 9 to 5:45 (they stagger the exits). and sometimes 9 to 2am. and then again to 9, because that's how it is, isn't it?.. nobody ever leaves.

her name is eustice probably for all the reasons asian kids get euro names and girls get masculine names. Her parents are hoping this will look better on a resume, that she will be taken more seriously with a white sounding manly sounding name

and she is serious. she can get real fucking serious real fast with subordinates and superiors alike. she can fix her face into this subtle yet penetrating show of dominance, again, against anyone. but no matter what her voice is still so thin and high because shes a baby

the first time we see her break that professional facade is at the ORTBO where she has the same childlike wonder as the innies do at fire.

despite her overconfident demeanor before, she is afraid to leave kier now and she must do it without her object of comfort. she speaks out of turn and apologizes to dylan. he was worried about her, he was the only one who asked if she was ok, are they forcing you to be here? paternally, he forgives her. will eustice ever see her own father again?

One detail about Severance which I find super interesting is how rarely money is discussed on the show. It’s basically almost never. You’d think for a story criticizing worker exploitation and capitalism there would be more of an emphasis on money/the salaries of the severed/lumon employees. There’s barely any, and we have no idea what they make.

That to me feels very intentional in order to make us instantly relate to the innies, who see none of the money they earn and enjoy none of the product of their labour.

Would our opinion on severance change from the start if we knew, for instance, severed employees made a thousand dollars a day? What about five thousand? Ten?? What’s the amount at which you’d split your soul? We are all imprisoned by capitalism, what would it take for you to make that step over the edge into becoming one of its jailors?

The show specifically doesn’t even touch on the topic, because its stance is very clear: There is no amount that’s worth a human soul, and if there is you would not be earning it, you would be paying it, and the cost is infinitely high.

Okay but Cold Harbour is the episode that really, truly, fully humanized the innies - all of them, but none more so than Mark S. Let me digress.

I was so goddamn excited when iMark and oMark started talking with the camcorder, and it was so clear that iMark was incredibly touched at the start, that his outie had been thinking about him, wanted to talk to him, apologized to him. But oMark fucked up BAD the moment he belittled iMark's relationship with Helly and got her name wrong. It mirrored Helena getting Gemma's name wrong in the restaurant, and it was the same flavour of disrespect and disregard. oMark obviously isn't anywhere close to as malicious as Helena, but this scene made it extra clear that he doesn't see iMark as his full equal, and iMark realized it too.

So when the time came, it made perfect sense that he acted how he did. Mark nearly died, accidentally committed murder, and more in the span of a few minutes. iMark rescued Gemma, saw her safely out the fire escape door, and in doing so discharged his duty to oMark. He was in an insane and impossible situation, somehow managed to accomplish his mission, and then once that was done, he stepped fully into his agency for the first time in his short life and made the choice HE wanted to make!!!

I completely and fully disagree with people saying that that choice didn't make any sense. Of course he and Helly don't know where they're going. Of course they don't know what they're doing. But they were ready for death, had had their final parting, and then iMark said no!

I felt horrible for Gemma, and I cannot begin to imagine how she would have felt seeing that - it absolutely broke my heart. But at the same time, I couldn't help but feel proud of iMark, in a way, because in that moment he stepped out of oMark's shadow and became his own person.
