introducing my fictional band cerulean!! 🌊🎸
(one day if i can pull it off, i’ll draw them with their instruments. but for now here they are looking a little cleaned up for some kind of promotional event. :))
cerulean is the surf rocky, grungy, indie pop rock band i’ve made up for my work-in-progress novel, which has now essentially become its own lil universe, which i call the SEverse (after the title of the original book) or the westview verse (after the fictional socal city where it takes place).
left to right: connor, peter, vinnie, mel, emma
descriptions (sorry for being so long but would you believe they’re still missing a lot of information):
connor: born 2000, white/irish-german. he grew up in washington then moved to california for college. he studied environmental science and is super big into nature, hiking, surfing (since moving), geology, botany, cryptids, alien conspiracies, and science fiction (which might be closer to science fact in his mind). he’s the middle child between two sisters, but he is an older brother type especially to his teenage cousin dallon, whose family he lives with. connor plays drums and is overall just a chill dude who wants to have fun making music with his friend. his pnw roots established his love for grunge so he brings that edge to cerulean. when not drumming, he can be found working at the song bin (a record shop/bookshop/coffeeshop), hiking or surfing with dallon, exploring the national parks, chasing alien sightings, or scrolling listings for vans to buy.
peter: born 2003, spanish, hispanic, hawaiian, and japanese. he grew up in westview raised by his grandparents after his teen parents proved to be pretty negligent. as the youngest and most emotional one, he is often the butt of vinnie and mel’s jokes. however, he’s probably the most productive and driven of the band. music is everything to him, and gives him an outlet. he sings and plays guitar in cerulean, but he can also play bass and piano and he writes a lot of cerulean’s songs. peter and vinnie have had a rocky relationship, mostly because their similarities dig at vinnie’s insecurities. peter has always been an easy target for bullying, and he hasn’t always taken it well. however, he’s growing and at his core he’s just looking for belonging and understanding. he’s quiet, easily intimidated, and is happy to let vinnie take the spotlight. he brings emotional sensibility to the band, reflective of his long emo phase (no, they won’t let him forget about his side bangs).
vinnie: born 1999, italian. vinnie (and mel more or less) is the one who started cerulean. he’s overconfident and a chronic flirt, but he can get the job done and look pretty darn great while doing it. he grew up in westview in a large affluent family with a large affluent house, which he both has definitely used to his advantage and also resents. he first started making music with his best friend coy and they had a popular indie pop band before coy’s tragic death. this loss sent vinnie reeling, and halted his musical creativity for a long time. however, he was able to begin healing with the support of mel and emma, and slowly returned to making the music he used to love. while coy preferred softer but more complex songs, vinnie embodies a harsher punk rock edge. he loves being a rockstar, but a lot of his antics are performative at the end of the day, which sometimes leaves him in an identity crisis. however, he mostly tries not to think about it, and instead he ponders emma, his friend-turned-band manager whom he’s had an on-off crush/almost relationship with for several years.
mel: born 2000, filipina and colombian. mel is 100% my girl. she’s tall and sarcastic and angry and vindictive and messy. her full name is melissa but do. not. call. her. that. she’ll give you a nasty glare which few fully recover from. she also grew up in westview in a large family. she’s known vinnie since elementary school but didn’t become close friends with him until high school when vinnie lost coy and she was also looking for someone to replace her older brother felix whose delinquencies had caused a major rift in her family. her harsh, imposing demeanor is one gigantic coping mechanism. she and vinnie have a beautifully weird codependent platonic soulmate kind of friendship though and their favorite pastimes are making music and tormenting peter (now that he’s in the band, they can do both simultaneously). she plays bass like all hot girls do, and loves hard rock, metal, and dad rock. while she’s the girl in the band, fans know better than to try anything on her, not out of fear of her male bandmates but entirely from her alone. she loves cerulean, though she won’t admit it out loud, but also struggles with fitting it into her busy schedule as an academic weapon studying law (ironically enough, but she hopes to become a very punk immigration lawyer).
emma: born 1999, white/eastern european. full name is emmaline but everyone just calls her emma. like vinnie, she grew up privileged in westview, but she’s a very genuine and creative person. she loves people and has organized various entrepreneurial endeavors since she was young, such as running a small local newspaper about events in the city. her connections, organization, and ambition made her the perfect manager for the scrappy rock band, a role she pretty much just made for herself out of love and a little motherly frustration. she makes sure cerulean has shows to play and matching clothes to wear at events, since the aesthetic of the band is something very important to her. along with her friend lilli, she also handles all the band’s photography and videography. she’s basically the fifth member of cerulean, which is why i ended up drawing her too. she can also play piano and guitar, has an occasional musical project with lilli, and also sometimes sings on cerulean songs when vinnie wants, usually as part of one of his elaborate flirtatious ploys. while she loves vinnie, she treats him more like a brother, and one whom she is often annoyed by when he’s late to a shoot or practice.
anyway that’s cerulean. let me know if you have any questions about them. i love these bunch of idiots so much and their dynamics are just so tasty.
