HC Severus survives Nagini and finds himself waking up in a muggle hospital. His wand is missing and he is questioned by muggle police officers, about what the hell has happened to him. Some unsatisfying answers later, the cop asks what that black stick is for, that they had confiscated from him, as he holds up a sealed plastic bag with the wand in it. And without it, poor Sev can't even obliviate them all. lol
“It’s a…family heirloom,” Severus says, his voice hoarse. He hopes that his lack of proper tone hides his desperation. “My mother…she made it for me.”
The officers look at him a bit funny, but they end up shrugging. They’d already examined it quite closely and hadn’t found anything that would suggest it could be used as a weapon. It would snap in half first.
“You were in a bad way,” An officer, whose badge identifies him as Sweeney says, fidgeting with his mustache. “Can you tell us what, exactly, happened? When we dredged you outta the river, we thought you were already dead.”
Severus shakes his head. “I don’t remember much. Something..bit me. I fell. And…that’s all.”
The officers nod, as though he’d said something profound. Severus can barely move his head due to all of the gauze around his neck, but his eyebrows are in rare performance as he arches them skeptically in reply.
“Luckily the doc here is a bit of a herpetologist freak. Has all sorts of venom samples on hand for her research,” another officer says with a smirk. “Better thank her for her quick thinking or you’d be in the morgue instead of a recovery room.”
“Hmph,” a dark-eyed man scoffs from the corner. “Doesn’t anyone else think it’s suspicious how fast ‘e’s healing?
“Well, he is in a hospital,” Sweeney says with a shrug, “that’s what they’re for, last I checked.”
The other officers laugh at this, and the dark-eyed man snorts and leaves the room.
“You call us and let us know if you remember anything, yeah?” Sweeney says, leaving the bagged wand and a business card on the side table. “We couldn’t find any identification on yeh, but we put out a bulletin, so if anyone turns anything in, we’ll make sure to get it back to you.”
“Thank you, officer,” Severus says, trying to keep his voice even and emotionless.
“Just try to keep yourself from being bitten by a venomous snake and dumped in a river, and we’ll call it even Mr…”
“Ah, yes. Then, good evening, Mr. Snape. Funny, the name sounds familiar. Do you have family from Liverpool?”
Severus fixes the man with a dead-eyed stare. “No. Sorry.”
“Ah, well, hopefully you can get ahold of them, then.”
Severus nods in reply and breathes a deep sigh of relief once the door shuts behind the mustached man.
With shaking hands, he rips the bag open and wraps his fingers around his wand. It is warm and comforting, like a living creature that has been mourning his absence and is excited to see him after such a long time.
It’ll be a little longer before he’ll be strong enough to Apparate to his safe house and prepare to leave for good, but for now, Severus lies back, his wand up the sleeve of his dressing gown, and he closes his eyes.
It’s not much, but it’s a start.
