The merging of fashion and function has become ubiquitous. “Athleisure,” one of last year’s ‘hottest’ words, is used in conversations about outdoor apparel as often as it’s used to review runway shows. For seasons now, designers have turned to Sewfree solutions to create versatile, technically superior garments that tell an aesthetic story, too.
There is similar opportunity for handbag and accessories design. This week, Nida’s trendspotting highlights “luxe athleisure” — breathing new life into basics by balancing athletics and aesthetics.
Some examples:
Whether it’s Coach, Alexander Wang, or Stella McCartney’s wallets, sneakers, or bags, amping up detail, finishes, and fabrics can turn, say, a knapsack into a coveted accessory. Similarly, a certain amount of playfulness can make a traditionally luxury item more accessible and day-to-day.
Of course, we wanted to lend our brainpower to the mix, so here’s our Sewfree application: a molded panel.
Similar to the 3d bonded logo, this application adds visual depth, but it also adds function. Consider this on the bottom panel of a pack, for example.
Not only does it allow for customized surface detailing, it also adds abrasion and water-resistance.
How else do you envision an application like this being used? Talk to us in the comments below, or send a tweet our / Nida’s way: @bemisbonds @nsuhail12.
One of the most frequently used Sewfree applications for handbags is a liner. Our adhesive can bond leather to leather, leather to suede, and leather to digitally-printed synthetic fabrics. [Pro tip: check out products 5274 or 3231 for various handfeels.]
For designers, Sewfree offers a reliable solution for a lot of familiar foes: glue that gloms, thread that breaks, fabrics that peel. For consumers, it means a bag that’s beautiful inside and out. One of our favorite examples is Pietro’s bucket bag. Take a peek:
Nida took the bonded liner a step further by bringing in the laser cutter to create a pocket system for a reversible tote.
Here’s a step by step:
- Choose your fabrics. We went with leather and suede. Bond them together using 5274. - Then, laminate textured film to the face side of the suede / leather. In our example, we used Cobra OT. In the image below, it’s the black film. - Use a laser or diecutter to create slits for pockets. - Peel the release paper off the backside of suede/leather panel and place the cut fabric pieces for the pocket bags. - Cover this side with your lining leather or material - Bond full suede leather panel at the recommended conditions - Peel release papers and you have a bonded liner with slit pockets, like the one below!
By our estimation, your basic bag is starting to look more luxe thanks to a new logo treatment and a more refined liner construction. Stay tuned! Later in the week we’ll be focusing on how the athleisure trend translates to handbag design.
