I forget what it's called but it's a mid-20th century novel about Byzantines & I don't even think this is the craziest thing that happens 

It also has this incredible full page of two women meeting and calling each other beautiful in internal dialogue and then the narrator says "there were no Lesbian overtones"

As you wind your way through the Japanese garden, past the foo dog and zen sand garden there’s a little hidden path off to the left behind the bamboo and peach trees. As you wind through it, music starts playing and you come upon a mysterious glowing bamboo- with a hidden ghost inside! *creepy wind sound*

Re: your post. My whole family is from Dutch country so I feel ya. I’m the shortest person in the entire family at 5’5” . I’m bitter. I should’ve been an amazon.

i’m also 5′5, and tbh actually my family’s not that tall - my brother is the tallest and he’s six-even i think, except for a couple of uncles - it’s just that i’m so used to being around people who are that much taller that it doesn’t really register? if i don’t have to crane my neck and take a step back to look at you, you ain’t tall is all i’m saying
