BUMBLEBY FIC REC: “much sweeter than it ought to be”

These past few days, I’ve been losing my mind over much sweeter than it ought to be by @perpetuallyfive. So my current mission is to get as many people to obsess over it as possible lmao

My thoughts: Don’t be deterred by how it’s a crossover with a video game! I’ve never played Dishonored before, but I didn’t have any trouble following along. It’s totally accessible and the setting is pretty cool! If you want more of a sneak peek into the fic... 

My additional tags: slowburn friendships and relationships, gentle gay touching and support, street urchin life, smells like revolution, individual character studies, library ruckus, coming of age, childhood friends, girls are so capable and strong!!!

YANG - sea shanties 

How could I NOT pick sea shanties for Yang after she becomes a whaler??? I made sure to pick shanties with female vocalists because I love the idea of her grinning ear to ear and singing along to these songs with the other sailors. There are A TON of variations of song #3 (the most famous one is probably the Irish Rovers version), but I still picked The Seadogs cover because I liked the imperfections and overall rowdiness of it.

RUBY - Studio Ghibli songs played by flute and piano

I tried to pick two songs that were bouncy and fun and then one song that was slower. Ruby has a really thoughtful and reflective side that I didn’t want to ignore. The musician who covered these songs has other versions with guitar and violin, but I thought flute was the best option for Ruby. I almost picked a couple songs from Louie Zong’s Dawgz album, but it felt like I was doing that mostly for Zwei and not Ruby 🐶

WEISS - choral music

I kept going back and forth between waltz music and choral music, but I ended up choosing choral music because it just felt like a better match for this Weiss. The songs and Weiss both feel powerful, traditional, and a little sad. I really wanted to only use all female choirs, but song #7 was too perfect to pass up. The one I kept hesitating about was song #8. I sang it with my high school choir, so I didn’t want to go with it just because of that. But it ended up being the best choice out of a couple other options!

BLAKE - TV/film scores with pretty strings

Blake’s songs were the hardest to figure out! At first I was like, should I try to find dark and mysterious songs? Heroic anthems with lots of fanfare? Slow cellos songs? I landed on songs from TV & film that had pretty string arrangements and great romantic swells. Really warm and loving sounds that cradle you because Blake is so caring and good. (She just hasn’t fully realized it yet!)
