Ten bloody comedies to watch this Halloween
After years of volunteering at LIFFF, I've seen plenty of funny movies with horror elements, and I thought I'd make some recs. These are all fairly low-profile movies, so a few of them might be hard to find (unless you're willing to go the illegal route). Including the #1:
1: Liza, a Rókatündér / Liza, the Fox Fairy Liza is a timid nurse whose only friend is the ghost of Japanese pop star Tomy Tani. When her patient dies, Liza decides to become more outgoing and start dating. But all her would-be beaus end up dead. The police are highly suspicious of her, and Liza herself wonders if she's cursed. This delightful Hungarian comedy has a warm heart and a high body count. If you enjoy unconventional love stories, Finnish country music, and people dying in bizarre ways, this one is absolutely unmissable!
2: The Loved Ones When mousy girl Lola asks Brent to the school dance, he kindly tells her he already has a date. But Lola isn't about to take no for an answer, and she's got a daddy who's willing to give his little princess anything she wants. This is more of a straight-up horror film in the Misery vein than a comedy, but in the midst of suspense it has a lot of laughs, as Lola gets ready to have her own private school dance the way she wants it.
3: Sexykiller: Morirás por ella College student Barbara knows what she wants in life - a perfect life, with a doting, rich husband and a big house. Oh, and to kill anyone who pisses her off or stands in her way. Too bad some medical students have accidentally invented a zombie machine that brings all of her victims back to life. This Spanish comedy winks at a lot of previous slasher and zombie movies, and manages to make you root for its bloodthirsty protagonist even as she's killing her way through the cast.
4: Some Guy Who Kills People Ken had a mental breakdown a while ago and is now trying to rebuild his life. This is complicated by his previously unknown daughter showing up at his door, and even further complicated by all his old enemies turning up dead, one by one. This film balances between drama, comedy and horror, with Kevin Corrigan as Ken staying mostly on the drama side and Barry Bostwick as the bumbling sheriff being the tentpole for comedy. The three genres make for a charming whole that's well worth seeing.
5: Housebound Kylie is sentenced to house arrest in her mom's house. This would be unfortunate enough on its own, but to make things worse, the place appears to be haunted. Now she's left to investigate the creepy events going on, knowing that she's not allowed to leave. Housebound builds up some honest suspense, and knows just how to deflate it in the best way for a laugh.
6. Egomaniac Catherine has written a zombie horror romantic comedy. Now she would like to film it, but is stuck in an endless loop of trouble: the financier who insists that she should add a talking dog, the producer who wants her to cast a bug-eyed, balding little timid guy for the hunky male lead, the constant lack of money... this can only end in a bloody disaster. Anyone who has ever been remotely involved with acting, filmmaking, or similar veins will recognize scenes in this film as being remarkably true to life in all their funhouse mirror glory.
7. What We Do in the Shadows A documentary team follows a group of vampires through their daily unlives as they argue over who's to do the chores, tell stories of how they met, and lure unsuspecting humans to a violent death. Probably the most high profile of these films, created by Flight of the Concord's Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. It's full of brilliant scenes, and the only downside is perhaps that it gets a bit thin as a feature film - but each individual moment is wonderful.
8. Zombadings 1: Patayin sa shokot si Remington / Remington and the Curse of the Zombadings As a child, Remington engaged in some homophobic bullying, and was cursed to grow up "bakla" (gay/third gender). Now he's turning 21 and the curse is kicking in - at the worst possible moment. Someone out there are killing all the local "bakla" and turning them into Diana Ross zombies. Can Remington escape this fate, seeing how he's becoming more bakla by the hour? This movie paints in broad, rainbow-coloured strokes and is very sweet for all its weirdness. If you like a great dollop of camp, this is for you! (Take heed, though, the whole Diana Ross zombie thing is a bit racist.)
9. Chastity Bites The local high school is visited by abstinence coach Liz Batho - who is actually Countess Elizabeth Bathory, made eternally young by bathing in the blood of virgins. Feminist reporter Leah figures out what's going on and has to stop her, but this is made more difficult by the fact that Leah, too, is a virgin. The tone is a bit early Buffy, though a lot more sex positive (condoms were tossed out into the audience at the screening I visited), more explicit in its feminism, and more diverse. So, a joy.
10. Eddie, The Sleepwalking Cannibal Lars is a struggling painter who takes a job as an art teacher in a small town. He becomes the temporary guardian of Eddie, a developmentally challenged, very kind man who has an unfortunate habit of sleepwalking when he's upset. And sleep eating. Rabbits, dogs... people... It's horrible. Lars really ought to stop it. But for the first time in years, he has some inspiration. This film is a wry take on the cannibalistic nature of art, and it heightens its theme by a radio station playing all the classic opera arias where people die horrible, bloody deaths. Despite the ever rising body count, it has a warm heart underneath, just like its title character.
