Woodhull - First Impressions
This was my first time at Woodhull #SFS17. I knew no one, not really. I knew of some of the attendees because I knew of their blogs and/or podcasts. But I didn't have any connections to anyone attending. I was a novice, eager to learn; far outside my "comfort zone."
It was an amazing event. I was overwhelmed. One of my heros - Nina Hartley - was there. I even had the chance to talk and thank her for her impact on my life (I even paid $5 for spanks on her ass for charity! Wahoo!!).
I attended the Dildorks live podcast - Hurrah!! Kate Sloan and Bex do a great podcast - funny and informative! Listen to them!
I bought some great books and saw and heard the testimonies of two amazing humans - Ms. Loretta Ross and Dr. Willie J. Parker. As a lawyer I was intrigued by Mr. Geoffrey Stone's keynote speech. As an historian, I was reminded how faceted humanity is; that nothing in history is a simple "straight line" and through a Twitter discussion with some other attendees, I learned of some new facets of the human condition that could and should inform Mr. Stone's speech and book.
I saw the movie "Trapped" and was filled with outrage and awe. Outrage that monsters walking on two legs could hide behind religion to justify their attack on women. And awe that there are such courageous men and women who dedicate their lives to fight against such attacks and strive to provide women with the dignity and care and support they deserve.
I watched and listened to persons of all genders and sexualities bare their hearts and souls at Bedpost Confessions, and was humbled by their admissions. To Ms. Julie Gillis - I was amazed and humbled at the courage of a teen aged boy to talk to his mom about masturbation and ask her advice and I will always call it "making sandwiches" from now on in his honor.
I laughed and clapped and was aroused at Bubbles and Burlesque. Amazed by the talented performers and their wonderful performances. You *all* Rock!!!'
I was amazed and enlightened and humbled by the sessions I attended each day. I learned so much, that I'm still processing and digesting all that was thrown at me.
I was lucky enough to meet some great people at #SFS17 #Woodhull, who opened my mind to new ideas and thoughts and possibilities.
To Carmen Vázquez - your poetry was earth shattering. Thank you for the honor of buying you a cigar at the Cigar Bar.
I went to the Cigar Bar each night and was blown away at the warmth; the welcome; and the challenging ideas that were thrown my way. I was humbled by the openness and willingness to answer my questions and to counsel me. Thank you!!
#SFS17 was a powerful and educational event for me. It was fun too! I was flooded with a ton of panels to attend, it was hard to do hard to choose. Each one I attended taught me something and yet again I was humbled by the courage displayed by both the panelists and the fellow attendees. You shame me with your courage and push me to be more. To be better than I am. Again, thank you.
I walked away from #SFS2017 #Woodhull with knowledge; with a desire to improve and expand myself; with a desire to take what I have learned and share it with my friends, my family, and my community. I left with the desire to come back to #SFS2018 #Woodhull having implemented *some* of what I learned and with greater self-knowledge as a result of those efforts.
Thank you to #SFS2017 #Woodhull and all that I met there. This list is incomplete, but my thanks to the following:
