Don't take it away now from me For then the birds won't fly Or sweet talk the morning For then the Earth would cry And long for the dew
S.G. Goodman, Take it away
Fuck it, full album review for 'Rustin' in the Rain'.
Note: I'm not a huge Tyler Childers fan; he seems like a cool dude, but I've really only vibed with a few songs up until now. Still, I'd been waiting for this release since SG Goodman shared that she'd be on the album, and that Tyler would be covering one of her songs.
So, quick thoughts after listening to the album many (many) times today:
✨'Rustin' in the Rain': solid, I like it. I'd love to hear it live. The energy would be incredible.
✨'Phone Calls and Emails': Tyler Childers, your mind. A song about being ghosted by a friend (lover?), with musical elements from 'Tennessee Waltz', one of the classic songs about being betrayed by a friend and a lover??? Are you kidding me?? Fucking excellent, sir.
✨'Luke 2: 8-10': Mr. Childers, the man that you are. It's a biblical shepherd pov and it's delightful. 10/10
✨'Help Me Make it Through the Night': written by Kris Kristofferson in 1969 and covered by nearly every country singer I can name and many other artists outside the genre (including Miss Piggy), covering this is just a rite of passage. Tyler's cover is solid.
✨'Percheron Mules': excellent song, actually about mules. Another one I'd enjoy live.
✨'In Your Love': yeah, yeah, we've all cried over the gay coal miners. Lovely.
✨'Space and Time': his cover is quite good (though the original is flawless) and the clips I've seen from his live performance at the Opry are even better. SG's version is so eerie and devastating because her voice just does that, but his voice is still a great match for this beautiful song.
