SGCI Portland 2016 - Day Two

SGCI 2016 Day 2 Report -  Quick & Dirty!

Okay...

Where do I even start?! Day two of SGCI, once again, blew me out of the water...

Started off with the vendors and publishers fairs, which, right at the start of the day were packed! I managed to somehwat effectively navigate the crowds and then spent most of the day in the INKubator sessions...

The INKubator sessions I attended, focusing on “Socially Engaged Printmaking”, “Prints As Social Enterprise” and “What does it takes to successfully run professional print studio?” were really interesting and incredibly relevant to my practice and management/operations of Articulate Ink. 

It was quite powerful to be in a room of people who were incredibly engaged and interested by discussing starting/running print studios (either commercial or non-profit).

I also had the opportunity to take part in a 20 minute one-on-one mentoring session with Sarah Smelser of Manneken Press, which, although it was only 20 minutes, was really useful and thought provoking. 

Sarah helped me to think about the process of starting and managing a print studio from a different perspective and she also provided with the names of some key resource people that she thought it might be helpful to talk to. Sarah was encouraging, positive, realistic and was a real asset is helping me to process some of the ideas and philosophies of studio management and operations that I’ve encountered at SGCI and that have my mind working overtime right now.

After an intensive amount of listening and participating in the INKubator sessions, I decided to take a bit of a break for some eats and drinks, so back to Paddy’s sunny patio it was. And how it was worth it!

Next up was a somewhat daunting 45 minute + bus ride to NE Alberta St., and to Flight 64 Studio to check out their member’s show and “First Thursdays” (which engages many artists, especially closer to the summertime apparently, but was already pretty active on this early spring day IMHO).

As it felt more and more like the bus I was on was edging closer and closer to suburbia I began to feel nervous that I weren’t headed in the right direction, however, as soon as I got off the bus at the appointed Google maps destination, I was met with a surprisingly familiar pow wow song and the street was lively with people, food, art exhibition openings and an open house at Flight 64 studio where I spent a good amount of the evening.

The Flight 64 studio had a great vibe, the Talking Heads and Bowie blared, boxed wine and conversation flowed and I felt right at home. 

We met up with some fellow Canadians, made acquaintances with some local printers and talked shop in a way that simply isn’t possible to do with strangers at any other time than during SGCI, or so I imagine.

Finally, a stop at Cruzroom for tacos and beers and with full tummies, we boarded the bus back downtown.

A day full of incredible printspiration (my newest freshly minted term referring to inspiring print related things) if I ever had one, more to come tomorrow...
