A/N: So this is just backstory and the build-up but it was super fun to write and I kinda wish I could direct something like this, obviously they eventually fall in love and the movie ends with Buck’s family crying as Steve asks for Bucky’s hand in marriage and his mum says “you’re already our family steve.” It’s cute. 

Bucky is a lawyer, Steve works for ends meet, Bucky moves his parents into a new home and never visits, and Steve is their next-door neighbour and makes himself helpful. Christmas is slightly awkward when you haven’t been home in years and you are fairly sure you’re parents are replacing you. | bucky barnes/steve rogers

When Bucky Barnes was younger everybody used to tell him that his hard-working attitude was a great thing, it would get him far in life. Working his way through college people would tell him that C’s get degrees and that he should be spending his 20s having fun, instead, he got an internship at Stark and Rhodes Law, 1 out of the thousands of candidates that applied. People threw him parties, alcohol was provided, and there was cake and sparkly banners to celebrate the extensive achievement working so hard to get to this point, Bucky didn’t attend a single one.  

He became a vessel of knowledge proud to know random laws and stake out points, including himself in meetings. Tony Stark would call him a vessel rather than the shark comments that used to be made during law school. Vessels hold themself with grace, filling up to be clean and precise, not messy and scared as the shark analogy pursues. 

Now that he’s a top lawyer running his own department at Stark and Rhodes, a member of the board and referring to himself as James now, people call him a workaholic instead. There is much less celebration when he’s named head of family law and invited to move out to Malibu to be closer to Stark and Rhodes headquarters. He travels all over the world the exact thing he always wanted to do, solve problems, and situate family messes, staying in luxury hotels, in penthouse suites. 

He brought his parents the house of their dreams, not that he ever visited.

Steve Rogers never had the luxury of moving out of his childhood home or going to college he didn’t even have a brilliant job, he instead had multiple ends-meet jobs. He worked hard all his life pushing through his schoolwork and creating art that got him scholarships and memberships to brilliant communities. All until his mother got sick, despite Steve’s scholarships and the small money he had made from art, no money truly compared to how much hospital bills cost, especially without insurance or cover.

It all went down the drain so he could help his mother, taking on jobs, and rejecting his chance to get out of the town of Rosehill, so he could be his mother's primary carer. Once his mother had finally passed he was too lost in Rosehill to ever leave, all of his opportunities had been stripped away to instead keep making ends meet at the cafe and then the Christmas tree farm to make some extra money during Christmas, as well as helping out the Kenner family in the garage when needed. 

Rosehill is a community and so when the Barnes moved in next door Steve was happy to help them move in, hearing them talk about their kids and the son that had brought them the house. They didn’t smile the way Steve would have expected them to when talking about a son that had turned into great things.

The holidays came and Bucky never planned on going home, but Tony was very involved with his own family and gave all his employees the weeks of Christmas until the New Year free. Tony gave him plane tickets to go visit his family with strict requirements from Rhodey to take an extended break. 

The Barnes family invites Steve to celebrate Christmas with them and their children, so Steve puts up their Christmas tree and decorates it with the people that have slowly become his parents.

It's a shocking surprise for them all when Bucky turns up on the porch Christmas day just to feel like he was replaced by the boy next door. It’s a great reminder that vessels also blow and spill over the edge.

Some things are the same in the mansion, just like a nice Saturday morning, and Steve prefers it that way. 

“Have you listened to Lana Del Rey?” Peter smiles brightly leaning over the breakfast bar, eying Steve with some sought of hunger in his eyes. It might actually be really hunger as Steve is currently making blueberry pancakes for breakfast, which isn’t unusual in their household.

Shaking his head Steve flips the pancakes in front of him, “you haven't introduced me to it yet.” The excitement on Peter’s face is great as he jumps off the stool and runs to grab his phone nearly knocking Tony over in the hallway as he comes to the kitchen. 

With a confused look on his face, Tony tilts his head, “what’s that all about?” His eyes do rise to excitement once he sees the coffee that is waiting for him at the breakfast bar. The excitement that Tony has in his eyes is the same as how Peter looked moments ago, they are extremely similar.

Moving Tony’s coffee closer to him Steve shakes his head laughing, “he wants to introduce me to some music artist, a Lana Delaware?” He mentions offhandedly finishing up Peter’s plate of pancakes and moving the plate to in front of the stool the youngest was sitting at. 

Tony burst out in loud laughter and it makes the large mansion feel lively, especially on the quiet Saturday morning before all Tony’s employees come in and Steve is back to his regular scheduled job as a bodyguard. “It’s Lana Del Rey,” Tony corrects his boyfriend, “he convinced Bucky just last week to listen to her and now he is constantly humming it around the house and in meetings.” Steve smiles softly at the influence Peter has on all of them, the way he has them all wrapped around his little finger.

“I’m back!” Peter shouts sliding into the room on the tile, his sock slippery against it. The music starts pouring out of Peter’s phone until it quickly connects to one of the many bluetooth speakers in the house. Smiling brightly Peter starts cutting his own pancakes before feeding them to Steve, “this is called Summertime Sadness, it’s one of her most popular ones!”

The excitement in Peter’s voice makes Steve love the music as he sways being feed breakfast and Tony kissing his cheek as he leaves to start his own day. This is pretty nice for a Saturday morning Steve thinks while he listens to music and is feed blueberry pancakes.

The stars shine brighter from inside the castle walls, and Bucky is glad to be there with Steve. 

They don’t get time like this often, sitting together with no advisor or the board breathing down their necks about what is to come next and so when they do get time together they like to sit and stare at the stars together. 

“I like when we can do this together,” Steve mutters into Bucky’s shoulder his head found its way into the other man's crook of his neck. Steve always found comfort in Bucky even when he was a young prince and being run around from lesson to lesson when Bucky was there he always felt better. 

Bucky tries not to nod so he doesn’t justle Steve, instead smiling along instead, “why don’t you say a wish then, wish for us.” Bucky suggests staring into the sky. In the towns that Bucky is used to it’s difficult to see the stars at night with all the pollution that’s in the sky and the bright lights that continue to light up the towns through nightfall. From the castle it’s clear as day, the stars are bright and every now and then one of them will be a shooting one, these stars and this moment are the reason Bucky used to sneak in when he was a kid. 

Steve and Bucky don’t really have to sneak around anymore after Steve’s coronation, at least not together. Yet they find themselves doing it anyway, sneaking away for moments like these when they can have a resemblance of peace and just look up at the stars. 

“I’m going to wish for a quiet tomorrow,” Steve says in response to the shooting star passing through their view. 

Smiling Bucky closes his eyes slightly listening to Steve’s breathing pattern, “I think that’s a great idea.”

Moving In

College move-in day is always a stressful one for not only students but families as well and it’s sweet.

College move-in day is always a stressful one for not only students but families as well and it’s sweet. It’s a nice time for parents to say goodbye and for students to learn what it really means to be an adult. Cooking, cleaning, you have to do everything yourself nobody there to remind you how it works or what cleaning agent to use instead. 

Peter is okay with this, before Tony Peter was a lot of things he did a lot for himself and so he’s confident he can do it all again. Tony may not think the same seeing as he’s currently struggling “Pete you thinking about helping your old man with this mattress,” Tony calls from the doorway.

In the doorway are Tony and Steve both offering to help Peter move in for the first time, yet complaining a lot as they do it (that’s mostly just Tony). Peter laughs looking at them both “Steve is a literal supersoldier,” Peter remind before hiding behind the cabinet he just put in himself.

Hiding from the inevitable speech he’s about to get from Steve ‘Back In My Day’ Rogers. Steve shakes his head “you know you should be happy your dad is helping,” he says lifting the mattress flawlessly and placing it onto the bed frame, “back in my day my mother was too busy to help out with things like this.”

Tony stares at his husband, “but you never went to college?” He questions rightfully.

Steve stutters over his reasoning for the comment “well yeah but if I did she wouldn’t have helped,” Steve stands his ground as the room is now done.

Peter’s college dorm has a loft bed with storage underneath and plentiful lego displays and posters around. It’s a single dorm, at Tony Starks request, a struggle to find at MIT, and so it’s not big but it’s cosy. 

Gifted to him by Peper lays mountains of blankets around his room attached to an Oddie and beanbag chair to help him in the tougher winter months. It’s nice he thinks because they care, Happy even gave him some vintage comics that are proudly displayed on his bookshelf. 

Peter laughs at the situation, moving out, and going to college. It’s all perfect as he sits on the edge of his new bed with a huge smile on his face, while his dad has tears threatening to pour down his face from seeing his son grow up.

“Are you sure you’re going to be alright because you could home school the first year, I’ve known plenty of people that do-” Steve laughs at his husband.

Tony slowly frowns at the laugh that he can hear. Steve just continues on despite the look on his partner’s face, “Tony we’ve already agreed that Peter will be attending class this year, he will come home during breaks and he’ll call all the time,” Steve smiles at Peter the same way he’s smiled since signing the official adoption papers, “won’t you Pete.”

Peter smiles bright watching his parents, so in love Tony with a frown on his face and Steve hugging Tony’s shoulder, supporting him. “I will promise to call you every week,”

“Day,” “Week,” Peter corrects his dad, jumping off his loft bed and coming to hug both his dads.

Tony mumbles mocking his son while Steve just sighs, “please don’t do that too often,” Peter laughs, ignoring the future reminder he’ll certainly get and just pulls them both into a hug. 

Peter smiles happily just from being here happy because he loves them both, “I love you, I’ll be fine.”

Snowing Birthdays

It’s snowing outside but it’s still Steve’s birthday and Sam wants to still make it special.

It’s snowing outside.

White crisp, cold snow.

December 12th, Steve Rogers's actual birthday as Bucky Barnes reminds the Avengers every year, because despite what the media thinks Steve Rogers, retired Captain America, is not born on the 4th of July.  

Steve Rogers isn’t the greatest fan of the snow, the cold, wet, damp, snow. 

Sam Rogers, as the best husband ever, knows this and so his mission now becomes how does he rectify Steve’s birthday? Letting his husband sleep in Sam adds an extra blanket and prepares to make breakfast in bed. Bacon, toast, coffee and the holy grail of breakfasts hashbrowns. 

It is exactly 6:45 am when Steve shifts and wakes normally prepared to go on a run, but since winter had rolled around this sometimes changes, like today.

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Stevie, happy birthday to you,” Sam whispers quietly coming into the warm bedroom. 

There is a smile on Steve’s face and that is how Sam knows he’s succeeded, placing the dvd collection of Harry Potter that also lays on the breakfast tray on the tv stand. Steves laughs seeing the stack, “is that what we’re doing today?” He questions nodding towards the stack as Sam places the tray on Steve’s lap refraining him from movement.

Sam nods shrugging his shoulder and getting back into bed and trying not to jostle the covers too much for Steve, “I just thought that because of the snow you’d like to stay inside, Tony has that party later tonight but I’m sure we could skip if you really wanted to.” 

It’s simpler inside Steve’s brain tells him as if because Sam mentions it’s the first time he actually feels the cold despite the heater and mountains of blankets they sleep with at night. Steve nods sipping his coffee and warming him up again, “that’s really sweet, thank you,” he kisses Sam slowly coffee tasting and all, coming back for a breath Steve laughs “won’t we have to get out of bed to change the DVD player now?”

Honestly, Sam had just brought the DVDs in because it was cute, a sign of love language and all that. He laughs asking FRIDAY instead, “FRIDAY can you begin playing the first Harry Potter movie for us?” Pinching a piece of toast from Steve’s birthday platter.

“You’re cheeky, you know that?”

“I know,” Sam responds, huddling into his husband for warmth while eating his breakfast as the opening begins.

Steve Rogers Bingo 2022

Steve Rogers, gave me a hard time in this bingo I will admit, but some of the fills I wrote are some of my favourite I've ever written. I found myself looking outside my comfort zones, enjoying my writing more and more as I continued to write.

I think the most discoraging thing about looking at my fills is that I didn't fill the free space because this bingo has certainly write much more then I use to.
