A/N: This was inspired by this beautiful animation by Kayla Coombs (who in my mind is the person Sam commissions (that or Steve)) of which a Husband proposed to his wife durnign Sleeping Beauty.

Malibu is different for Sam, especially in the winter, since the house rebuild and the remodelling Tony suggested they come out for a weekend trip, away from the tower and the team just purly Tony and Sam. Despite it being Tony’s idea Sam can still find him in the lab over the 3 days that they stay in the winter, they always have dinner and go to bed together but it is peaceful to do their own things during the day.

Just maybe not today.

“Come watch a flim with me?” Sam leans on the labs door, looking at his boyfriend with adoration in his eyes, as Tony walks through the lab, headset on, black shirt, musles on point (which is a physical gain for Sam).

It’s not their annivevasary, nobodies birthday, but yet it feels like a special moment between them as Tony looks toward Sam. It’s sweet that even when they are in malibu and away from work so Tony can do whatever they want Sam can still convince him out of the lab. “When did you become such a film consour?” Tony teases turning off the holograms infront of him, taking off they ear pieces that control the nanobots of his newest suit.

Smiling Sam moves closer Towards Tony, bith of them meeting in the middle of the lab, “I haven’t had much else to do while we are here, and I thought I should take advantage of the cinema.” Sam brings his arsm around Tony’s shoulder, “I think you should take advantage of it with me,” Sam smiles brgiglht brushing his noes against Tony’s. 

It doesn’t take much more convincing then that.

Tony smiles kissing him on the cheek, shutting down everything around him, “sounds like a plan.”

They sit down to watch Snow White as Sam declares that it should be their new years revolution as couple they should watch every disney movie, Tony just laughs. 

“So we are starting with Snow White then?” Tony questions sitting down on a recliner cinema chair, monovouring his popcorn and drink to make sure they don’t spill at the couple sits down. 

Sam corrects with a smile, “Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, actually,” it’s casual as he begins to munch on popcorn before it all even begins, leaning into to Tony’s embrace. The movie rolls without them even needing to ask JARVIS, opening on Snow White singing by the well.

Tony is shocked as Sam is crying in his arms as Snow White is placed into the glass coffin, but then something changes, the prince shows up and it’s not prince, well he is in prince gear but he looks a lot like Sam. The camera shift towards the coffin where Snow White is to lay but it isn’t Snow White, it’s a guy, a guy in very similar resemblance to Tony Stark. Prince Sam wakes up Prince Tony and the movie stops as Prince Sam gets on one knee, and Tony is so confused by the movie that he doesn’t realise that real life Sam does the same thing.

Tony on the screen seems frozen in time as he’s only just woken up and now the prince he had been destined for is proposing to. 

The screen zooms in, lonney toons style and Prince Tony winks at him as the screen reading, ‘To Be Continued’ and it takes until them before he looks down a hand flying to his mouth. Sam is on one knee aswell, a ring box in his hand, opening up to a gorgeous gold ring with a ruby jewel encrusted into it.

“Tony from the day I met you I saw a future with you, once Rhodey introduced you as a menace I knee that I wanted you to be my menace. I wanted you to annoy me everyday, and have the experience of attempting to get you to sleep and sleep beside you in a much comfier bed then a camp single.” Tony is crying now, because the ring is beautiful and the speech is gorgeous, and Sam put so much effort into the proposal and the movie and it is very much them.

“Tony Stark will you be my menace, my partner, and my best friend for life? Will you marry me?”

Tony nods with a whispered out, “yes!” Which leaves Sam jumping for joy into Tony’s arms placing the ring on his finger, “no we’ll have to get you a ring of you own,” Tony tells Sam, happy to have his finance in his arms, and the ring doesn’t way him down as much as he thought ut ever would.

Sam smiles kissing Tony once again, “sounds like a future plan.”

Steve is looking for his jumper, his and his alone, Tony thinks the jumper he's wearing fits him just right.

Tony before college didn’t know what a laundry day was, he never really needed to worry about if his clothes were going to be clean for him the next day because he knew somebody would do it.

Steve on the other hand is very used to laundry day and maybe having a single pair of track pants to wear on said day, it’s certainly different now that there are enough clothes in his wardrobe that he wouldn’t have to do laundry for months. 

This walk-in wardrobe is where he currently stands wrecking through each wrack looking for his jumper, the jumper that was warm and blue and embarrassingly themed around Captain America, himself. 

“Steve, babe, have you seen my cufflinks, the lego ones Peter got me?” Toy asks nonchalantly yelling out over the penthouse, walking into their shared bedroom. When Steve sees him his face lights up seeing what Tony is wearing.

He then goes dark, just slightly, “you stole my jumper!” Steve excuses Tony pointing towards the embroidered jumper that clearly has C. America on the sleeve and the shield stitched on the back. So what that Steve wears his own merchandise, and maybe it was a custom order on Etsy but it’s still his, gifted by Ned and Peter the last Christmas.

Tony’s hands raise in the air, “all my jumpers were in the wash, I didn’t think it would be a big deal, sorry,” he begins pouting sitting on the puff that is in the middle of the wardrobe, yes the room is that big. 

Steve breathes one big breath in and then one out trying to plaster a smile on his face, going into Tony’s side of the closet Steve rummages before finding a jacket of Tony’s an ironman letterman-themed jacket with Stark printed on the back. Attempting to put it on Steve mutters, “how would you feel if I just put your clothes on!” 

Putting a hand over his mouth Tony has to stop himself from laughing as he watches Steve attempt to fit in his Tony-sized jacket. Tony wants to be mad or sympathise with Steve but he really finds himself doing the opposite, “Steve, honey, I don’t think you fit.” Steve ever the righteous puffs out his chest ignoring Tony’s comment.

“I want an apology,” Steve mutters taking off the jacket now that he knows it doesn’t fit and it’s not ever planning on fitting.

With a sly smile, Tony shrugs his shoulder, "I'm not looking for forgiveness. And I'm past asking for permission." So proud of himself Tony is smug at the comment he has just made, “besides I think it looks better on me,” he smirks twirling in the mirror with the overside jumper. 

So Steve jumps at him pulling him to the floor rolling around and play-fighting before ending up just laying on the ground laughing, “we are way too old for this.”

Tony nods curling into steve’s side, “definitely.” And that’s where they lay calm and collected.

“I’m still not sorry,” Tony mutters and the whole argument happens again.

Tony: Hey I really need help on this stupid assignment I have no idea what I’m doing for Bishop’s classes xxxx-xxx-xxx: Um I think you have the wrong number? I don’t know a Bishop Tony: Are you not my project member for Rhodes's class? Tony: We have to do that film analysis and understand the make way of generational discussion in media xxxx-xxx-xxx: Sorry no, I’m a med student Tony: Oooh fancy, and does the med student have a name? Stephen: Uh Stephen Strange, what do you do? Tony: Tony, engineering specifically in med tech Stephen: What are you doing in a film class? Tony: My friend's mum teaches the class, it’s just some fun. Tony: Sorry by the way. 

It is weird to Tony that this random man whom he shouldn’t even know has more impact on his life than his actual film class partner who he actually talks to on a daily basis. Despite how sorry Tony might say he is to Stephen he doesn’t really mean it because Stephen is the first breath of fresh air Tony feels like he has had since meeting Rhodey.

The college hasn’t been what he thought it would be, he thought he’d meet new people, especially being at MIT there are people everywhere, maybe even meet his soulmate for the first time, and maybe his stupid tattoo would go away, but college hasn’t been that for him. 

“Hey, you doing okay?” Rhodey asks walking into their shared dorm room and watching as Tony spins around continuously on his wheely desk chair. It’s not an unusual sight, it’s what Tony does when he’s thinking up a big idea, normally for a test or paper. This is somehow different though, maybe the look on his face, or the fact that he’s hiding his arm. Rhodey squints at his best friend, “you lost your soul mark?” He questions staring at Tony’s forearm. 

Turning around to Rhodey he nods, “no idea how I lost it, don’t know who I’ve interacted with today that I don’t normally interact with because even the barista I talked to today is the same guy.” He sounds annoyed because he is annoyed, soulmates have always annoyed Tony with the idea that some connection could pull two people together, some universal connection. There is absolutely no science behind soulmates, there’s no idea of how they ever existed. 

Rhodey feels bad for Tony sure but yet he can’t figure out what to say, so instead he apologises, “I’m sorry.”

He has messaged Steohen every day for the last 2 months, and Stephen is here in Masshecutes. He has been right here since the first message. Tony is staring at him across the convention hall and he has no idea how he knows it’s him but he does.

So he messages the man.

Tony: Are you in Massachusetts? Stephen: Yeah, that’s where I go to med school Stephen: Why? Tony: I think you are my soulmate

Tony walks towards Stephen and he has no idea how he knows but the man he is walking to is frowning at his phone, eyebrows creased as if a man just confessed to him that they were soulmates. A man he doesn’t even know.

Tony: Look up.

Stephen’s mark disappears, and Tony watches saying the same words he just messaged out loud, “look up.” He never believed any of the ridiculousness that once you know, you know, the universe will tell you and sparks will fly. As Stephen looks into his eyes for the first time Tony believes it all, that it is possible. Maybe soulmates aren’t such a bad thing.

Date nights are a little different now.

“What’s all this?” Tony smiles coming into the tower, a little later than planned after Pepper had kept him late through a meeting. He’s much happier to be back now, on a Friday night prepared for the future prosper of the weekend. 

Date night is always nice. It includes hot chocolates, blankets by the fire, and a nice pasta meal, it’s incredibly simple.

Tony likes the simplicity of it all it’s completely different to his bachelor days, with no fancy restaurants with barely two pieces of pasta on the plate. He’s not trying to impress anyone anymore, Stephen is already in it for the long haul.

Candles are littered around the kitchen table and toddler Ben is sitting in Stephen’s lab feeding him Tony’s mum’s in-famous carbonara recipe. “Hi baby,” Tony coos at his grandson, “are you joining your grandpa and Nonno for date night are you?” He asks lifting the small boy out of Stephen’s lap.

Laughing Stephen takes the chance to eat some of his own pasta before responding, “Peter and MJ are having a night of their own and I thought we could take this little one,” and Ben giggles as Stephen grabs his little hand. 

Nodding Tony sits down in front of his own plate of carbonara with Ben trying to take some of the noddles for himself. Sighing as he lets Ben takes his pasta anyway Tony smiles, “do you remember when Pete was this tiny? Interrupting movie nights, crawling all over the house?” 

Stephen frowns tilting his head, “we didn’t know Peter when he was this young?” Stephen reminds shooting a look at Ben.

Sighing Tony knows that “but we both know he would have been cute if he was.” Stephen does laugh along with Tony on that point, slowly moving Ben’s hand away from the burning candle he was trying to play with. 

“Why don’t we take this to the couch instead? Somewhere little hands can’t find fire!” Stephen nods taking Ben from Tony and kissing him on the way to the couch. Moving to the couch Stephen sits down, ben curling up in his lap and Stephen presses a kiss to his head, it’s adorable.  

A movie begins to play on the large screen with blankets covering them Tony never expected this but, he doesn’t mind a few interruptions on date night, especially if they are as cute as Ben is.

A/N: So this is just backstory and the build-up but it was super fun to write and I kinda wish I could direct something like this, obviously they eventually fall in love and the movie ends with Buck’s family crying as Steve asks for Bucky’s hand in marriage and his mum says “you’re already our family steve.” It’s cute. 

Bucky is a lawyer, Steve works for ends meet, Bucky moves his parents into a new home and never visits, and Steve is their next-door neighbour and makes himself helpful. Christmas is slightly awkward when you haven’t been home in years and you are fairly sure you’re parents are replacing you. | bucky barnes/steve rogers

When Bucky Barnes was younger everybody used to tell him that his hard-working attitude was a great thing, it would get him far in life. Working his way through college people would tell him that C’s get degrees and that he should be spending his 20s having fun, instead, he got an internship at Stark and Rhodes Law, 1 out of the thousands of candidates that applied. People threw him parties, alcohol was provided, and there was cake and sparkly banners to celebrate the extensive achievement working so hard to get to this point, Bucky didn’t attend a single one.  

He became a vessel of knowledge proud to know random laws and stake out points, including himself in meetings. Tony Stark would call him a vessel rather than the shark comments that used to be made during law school. Vessels hold themself with grace, filling up to be clean and precise, not messy and scared as the shark analogy pursues. 

Now that he’s a top lawyer running his own department at Stark and Rhodes, a member of the board and referring to himself as James now, people call him a workaholic instead. There is much less celebration when he’s named head of family law and invited to move out to Malibu to be closer to Stark and Rhodes headquarters. He travels all over the world the exact thing he always wanted to do, solve problems, and situate family messes, staying in luxury hotels, in penthouse suites. 

He brought his parents the house of their dreams, not that he ever visited.

Steve Rogers never had the luxury of moving out of his childhood home or going to college he didn’t even have a brilliant job, he instead had multiple ends-meet jobs. He worked hard all his life pushing through his schoolwork and creating art that got him scholarships and memberships to brilliant communities. All until his mother got sick, despite Steve’s scholarships and the small money he had made from art, no money truly compared to how much hospital bills cost, especially without insurance or cover.

It all went down the drain so he could help his mother, taking on jobs, and rejecting his chance to get out of the town of Rosehill, so he could be his mother's primary carer. Once his mother had finally passed he was too lost in Rosehill to ever leave, all of his opportunities had been stripped away to instead keep making ends meet at the cafe and then the Christmas tree farm to make some extra money during Christmas, as well as helping out the Kenner family in the garage when needed. 

Rosehill is a community and so when the Barnes moved in next door Steve was happy to help them move in, hearing them talk about their kids and the son that had brought them the house. They didn’t smile the way Steve would have expected them to when talking about a son that had turned into great things.

The holidays came and Bucky never planned on going home, but Tony was very involved with his own family and gave all his employees the weeks of Christmas until the New Year free. Tony gave him plane tickets to go visit his family with strict requirements from Rhodey to take an extended break. 

The Barnes family invites Steve to celebrate Christmas with them and their children, so Steve puts up their Christmas tree and decorates it with the people that have slowly become his parents.

It's a shocking surprise for them all when Bucky turns up on the porch Christmas day just to feel like he was replaced by the boy next door. It’s a great reminder that vessels also blow and spill over the edge.
