Untranslatable Words in Egyptian Arabic

Shaabi [شعبي] 

A word that describes something as working class or blue-collar. The definition changes depending on the context.

A Shaabi area would be easily be classified as one which has a plethora of loud tok toks and microbuses. An area with poor sanitation, infrastructure, uncompleted buildings and over crowdedness. 

Shaabi weddings usually takes place in a very large tent usually in the middle of the street and almost always has belly dancers, a DJ and a ridiculous amount of food.

Shaabi music is considered the street music of Egypt. A genre of electronic music which was popularised as ‘mahraganat’ during the 2011 revolution due to it’s lyrics which expresses the difficulties and frustrations of modern Egyptian life and can immediately be differentiated from other genres by its distinct use of auto tune, borrowed music samples from known English songs, and its political, humorous and sometimes sexist lyrics.
