In Shade Studies, published in Malmö, Sweden by Timglaset Editions in 2019 in an edition of 99 copies, typewriter/text artist CDN Warren explores the typewriter’s capacity for painting, weaving, and composing patterns and structures. The 12 decorative patterns in the book are "the results of a protracted, exhausting and at times faltering conversation between myself and an Olivetti Roma . . . each of which helped form and inform the next in an exponential unraveling over which I was glad to quickly lose all control." Of his practice, Warren states: "The typewriter is often referred to as an obsolete technology. With the twelve works in this series, I beg to differ."
