shaded sable: yellow/beige base coat with black “shaded” pattern along the back and often top of the head

Any chance of an ID on my boy Marly? I've got no idea where his little grey face came from.

Hi Marly!! I'm guessing he is a black-based masked shaded sable

I waffled on him for a while due to those face markings, which look a bit more agouti-ish, and was wondering briefly about sable merle. But shaded sable just looks a bit different on long-haired furnished dogs, especially since haircuts change how much undercoat you're seeing.

That said - he's one where I'd love to see baby puppy photos, if you have any!

As soon as I saw this dog I thought “That’s a Briar puppy” - and I was right! She’s from the West Virginia litter that I was looking at but passed on (because the guy was really uncommunicative and had kind of a lot of Confederate flags on his fb profile). The sire of that litter, Briar, is a dog I really like who belongs to the breeder in Pittsboro. I’ve met him, and he’s great, even though I initially didn’t care for his look. Just so engaged with his owner - really wants to work with her. He puts a strong stamp on some of his puppies, both in his dark dark sable shading and in the face and build. This dog looked black at birth, and you had to look closely in the right light to see the sable color underneath.

Her name is Boots and she’s almost exactly the same age as Omie, but significantly sturdier in build. Briar is also Omie’s grandsire, making Boots her (half) aunt.

I am glad to document her particular fur patterns. Observe the delightful margins of her incomplete collar, the line of dark where left- and right-leaning chest fur meet, the socks, the ear fluff and nose freckles. It's all so good.
