does white spotting on dogs work the same way white spotting on cats work
or is it different
how does dog white spotting work?
There's at least 3(+2) different ways of dog white spotting:
"Regular" piebald. This is a mutation of the MITF gene, and it's additive like cat white spotting: homozygotes have more white than heterozygotes. It's vaguely similar in distribution too, it's random and starts from the legs, gives blazes often and leaves the top of the head colored for last.
Irish spotting. This is recessive and much less random. Basically all irish spotted dogs look like this (the white can go up on the neck):
Whitehead. Another additive mutation, but this one starts from (you guessed it) the head; consequently this one sometimes causes blue eyes and/or deafness.
Panda. This is a KIT mutation just like the regular cat white spotting allele, and can be found only in a specific german shepherd line.
Residual white (or as we cat people call it, lockets). As far as we know, this can just happen to any dog, regardless of genetics.
