A few days ago while browsing new music on Spotify, I stumbled across Kicker, the debut album of new Indie Pop/Alternative artist, Zella Day. There are several “hey this is actually dope” type of records on Kicker that instantly stood out and grabbed my attention. “Shadow Preachers” in particular, is one of my favorites. I can see the comparisons people have made between her and Lana Del Rey on a few songs, both sonically and thematically, but there are also records on the album where her own individuality and distinct artistry becomes apparent if there are any doubts. Though each song lives within a world of its own, Kicker is a cohesive (and in my opinion, successful) piece of work. I look forward to more music from Zella Day in the future.
