The Shadow Academy

(still a work in progress, and so subject to change!)

The Shadow Academy is located on Kyrnis, in a stony gorge. The academy itself is built into an E N O R M O U S geode which has broken off from a cliff face. The inside is filled with crystals in a whole rainbow of color, so this is obviously some sort of magically-created geode, because geodes don't work that way.

In any case, the geode blocks all sun from reaching the academy within it. It had a different name many thousands of aurs ago, but now it's just called Shadow Academy.

It's a magic school.

It was first established after the deaths of the original gods when magic was first filtering into the world for mortals and they needed guidance. The masters who'd advocated for mortals to have access to magic were the first professors.

Originally, all these professors were elves, but there are many masters at the school now.

Shadow Academy is not split into "houses" like schools in the UK (or Dark Academia, which uses a certain wizard series as a template) but into years, more like American schools.

Students of any ages may attend, from youngsters who show promise, all the way to the elderly who are just discovering their talents. Though most of the students tend to be younger, there is a whole range.

One may apply to be in the school, or they may be invited. No one is rejected because of space concerns, but one does have to display a significant magical ability in order to attend. Attendance costs nothing, and it is impossible to pay your way into the school.

Despite the name, the processes and procedures in Shadow Academy have a light-based theme:

The headmaster/principal is called the Novalight. Professors and teachers are called Starlights. Maintenance workers/custodial workers are called Fireflies. First-year students are called Lamplights. Second-year students are called Sparklights. Third-year students are called Emberlights. Fourth-year students are called Glowlights. Fifth-year students are called Firelights.

There is an optional "Final Year" which is a work study program. This offers students hands-on experience in their chosen fields and is paid for by the academy, should the student so desire. These students are called Auroralights.

Shadow Academy also teaches basic classes for younger students in lieu of school. Math, history, and science are taught alongside magic.

Uniforms have various options for different species, and generally have color accents which match the preferred colors of their god or gods. Some students study several forms of magic (fauns excluded, as they are only able to study one) and so they will have multi-colored uniforms. Each set is custom-made for each new student.

The Shadow Academy is heavily featured in Book 2 of the Bestiary Trilogy, Shadowbind! Can't wait to expand on the lore for everyone.

Each god on Erit has two animal associations, which are used interchangeably. The first listed is the most common.

Drowlian: Lioness or leopard. Aurapax: Lion or butterfly. Petalvine: Doe or snail. Wheriae: Octopus or anglerfish Aeoniri: Dragon or nightingale Nebula: Moth or kitsune. Xax: Rat or cobra. Faoliia: Rainbow serpent or unicorn. Ziro: Burying beetle or meerkat. Ghiscaer: swift or bat. Antirrhopus: Velociraptor or goanna. Qit: Goat or turtle. Ivriarck: Firefly or electric eel. Kaneer & Shastaa: Phoenix or salamander.

I'll do some art of these eventually.
