Shadowchasers Snippet

A little character sketch from a smol idea I had that made me giggle.

Edgar Benedek: For such a modern guy, his name is so out dated. Who names their kid Edgar anymore, anyhow? Currently, he’s reviewing and editing his latest Youtube video, the result of a three day ‘camping’ expedition with the stuffy, closed minded skeptic of a partner he’d been lucky to find, Jonathan MacKenzie.

Jonathan was all that on campus, the first year students were all infatuated with his British accent, fit physique (without being inhumanly built) and long brown hair and big brown eyes… wait, what was he doing? Right, editing the trail cam footage into his video, preparing the dialogue…

Whether or not it was actually bigfoot was something the two of them would disagree on, but the footage, blurry as it was, and the nature of the claw and teeth marks, photos of which had been sent to a dozen experts, made a mockery of Jonathan’s Bear theory…

The door slams open, startling Benny. There he is, as if summoned from the beyond by Madame Letisha, one of Benny’s favorite contacts- “Jesus, Johnny, boy, you almost took the hinges off-“

“I woke up this morning to four hundred and eighteen notifications.”

Benny grins. “Right, yeah, well-“ He had relaxed before bed with a few drinks, well half a bottle, well, however much was left in the bottle. It had been a terrifying, almost dying weekend. That kind of experience does things to a person. Jonathan’s skepticism didn’t help.

“Four hundred and eighteen. I listened for a half hour as each one pinged on my phone.” Jonathan taps his index finger on the desk rapidly, making Benny’s mouse travel across the mousepad, until it stops at the wrist rest, a nice ample pair of anime girl breasts. Jonathan notices it, scowls, and then looks at Benny again. “Half an hour!”

Benny shrugs. “Well, I did have a couple of drinks…”

“A couple of…” Jonathan straightens and shakes his head. “I wouldn’t have minded so much, but even my students noticed-“

“Students… plural?”

“Well… April.”

“Ah, right, the cute one that smiles and bats her eyelashes at you every time she sees you.”

Jonathan fumes. “Not everyone’s sex drive is their top priority, you wretched letch. Anyhow, she told me that each one of them was something called an Old Man Screams at Clouds gif. I don’t think I’d have minded if you actually responded intellectually, but I suppose that’s too much to ask of a man-child like you.”

Benny grins slowly. “So she follows you pretty close on Bluesky, huh? How are her grades, by the way?”

“None of your damn business.” Jonathan answers.

“Uh huh.” Bennynods. “I don’t know if you’re oblivious, or a hypocrite.”

Jonathan’s scowl gets deeper, which impresses Benny.

“Listen, I’m working on the video for our little investigation in Oregon, got anything to add?”

Furious, Jonathan turns to leave. “Go boil your head.”

“See you Friday,” Benny repplies. “Morehead wants us checking out the Washington State sightings next! UFOs this time, a few disappearances.”

Jonathan’s shoulder hits the door frame, and Benny’s pretty sure Jonathan was swearing in Welsh as he departed. He chuckles. “Dude’s too uptight. Don’t know if getting laid would fix him or make him worse. Whatever. Back to editing.”

So my Shadowchasers worldbuilding is going really well, I have a small blurb and motivations for Jonathan, Benny, and the SI (who is a plural and a shapeshifter.)

Fun thing is how it ties into the other stories so easy, and begins After the Blackout.

Updating Jon and Benny was fun, and I love the dynamic of their characters and their own personality driven story arcs.

Even have a good idea how to reinterpret the Pilot episode.

Where are all the Shadowchaser fans that were so rabid when they had their story archive and active community? I want in! :D
