maul crying softly...
"For you, it is!" He explodes in an outburst of anger, years of built up grief, loneliness and frustration bubbling to the surface. "You have so many other friends to talk to! I only have you! Why do you have to go in the morning? Why can't you just... stay and be with me?" The anger in his tone fades into something more somber, but it's clear he's still unhappy with this, as he closes his eyes and huffs, turning his back to you to indicate the conversation is over and he needs time to dwell on this. He just expects you to leave him like everyone else did, to forget about him as soon as you leave this shadow under the globe so you can go romance other objects.
But you didn't.
You didn't take it well. Not at all. Skips' sudden eruption had left you feeling hurt and a little startled. You thought it was going so well, and even if you couldn't be a shadow with him for eternity, it wouldn't matter if you had eachother regardless. Thoughts swirled in your mind, emotions clashing and ready to overflow, even if you didn't want it. Was there something you did wrong? Was the failure of this ritual entirely on you? Were you and Skips truly not meant to be?
These thoughts kept building and building, spiralling out of control. To make matters worse, he just dismissed you after the failed ritual, ready to leave this conversation with loose ends and no reassurance. It quickly became your breaking point. It...
...
Wait, were those tears brimming..?
Your face scrunched up, tears indeed pricking at your eyes as your own emotions come to show. The familiar sting made you blink, salty tears beginning to roll down your flushed cheeks and fog up your Dateviators. The stifled sniffle that escapes you doesn't go unnoticed by Skips. He looks over his shoulder, only to be met with the pitiful sight of you staring at the floor like a heartbroken puppy, teary-eyed over the argument. He folded immediately.
"Shit-" He cursed under his breath, turning back around immediately to dash to your side. "Penumbra, wait- I didn't mean- I'm so sorry, I-" He wraps his arms around you, albeit with hesitancy. Skips wasn't an expert at physical touch, considering he had been lone in the shadows for years, but still, he pushed that aside to comfort you, holding you tightly as if you'd disappear. He didn't anticipate you to cry. Why didn't you just move on immediately? Why didn't you just abandon him right then and there?
Your soft sobs slowed as his shadowy form enveloped you, cold yet warm at the same time. The wisps of his shadows tickled you, gentle and airy, melting your sadness away. To hold you like this... was everything he ever wanted.
"Penumbra... please don't cry." He pleads, voice soft yet holding the weight of guilt. He strokes your back gently as stuttered gasps wrack your body. It pained him to see you sad, considering this was the first time he ever did.
"Are you mad at me...?" You whimper, clutching onto him even with the possibility of him being angry with you. Skips' eyes widen a tad, heart heavy in his unalive chest. You really believed you were at fault here?
"Mad at you? No, no, no. It was never you I was mad at. I'm sorry for blowing up like that. It's just..." He pauses, sighing and nuzzling your hair, sadness creeping into his tone. "...I'm so scared to lose someone again."
A silence hangs in the air.
"Is it wrong I'm not a shadow?" You murmur into his shoulder, the self-doubt in your tone still evident, even if it's muffled by his clothes. It only serves to make his heart even heavier with guilt and regret. His outbreak really affected you without his intent to. He mentally berated himself for letting his emotions run loose like that.
"No, you're perfect." He whispers reverently, nothing but sincerity in his tone. "You're a shining light in my cold, dark world."
His affectionate words, holding the utmost respect for you, warmed your heart. You snuggle into his scarf, your Dateviators nudging out of place. But you didn't notice. This was the reassurance you needed. Both of you needed. The outside world no longer existed, just you two in the void, soaking up eachother's presences. No words were required to confirm that you were going nowhere. You'd be Skips' Penumbra until the end of time, flesh or shadow, and he wasn't letting you go.
